PS5 Box Small Print Confirms No Going Back on Digital-Only Future

New look for PS5 console this holiday season – PlayStation.Blog

Sony has made its position on physical media about as clear as it gets. New PS5 console boxes now ship with an 'Important Notice' sticker that spells out the end of disc-based game sales in plain language.

The notice reads: 'From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.'

That's it. No ambiguity, no wiggle room. Disc-based purchases for new releases stop in January 2028.

What the box actually says

The notice was first spotted by Reddit user Epsilon123, who flagged the updated packaging. The wording is precise in a way that matters: games released before January 2028 can still be played on disc, so your existing physical library isn't going anywhere. But anything releasing after that date will exist only as a digital purchase, whether you buy it from the PlayStation Store or a traditional retailer.

That last part is worth sitting with. Even physical retailers selling PS5 games after January 2028 will be selling digital codes, not discs. The shelf space for boxed games isn't just shrinking, it's being formally retired.

Sony's digital push has been building for a while

This isn't a surprise move. Sony has been nudging players toward digital purchases for years, and its own earnings data shows it's working. Digital software sales have consistently outpaced physical media across recent PlayStation reporting periods, which gave Sony the confidence to commit to this timeline.

The 'Don't Kill The Disc' petition that circulated earlier represented real frustration from a segment of the player base, but petitions rarely shift corporate strategy when the sales data points the other way. Sony looked at the numbers and made its call.

The January 2028 deadline also lands in an interesting window. The PS5 generation will be well into its later years by then, and if a PS6 is on the horizon, it makes sense that Sony would want the next platform launching into an already-digital ecosystem. Designing hardware without a disc drive is cheaper, and if the install base has already adjusted to digital purchasing, there's less resistance to manage.

For players who've been tracking PS5's platform direction, this is part of a broader pattern. If you want to know how the PS5's hardware features are being used right now, the GTA 6 PS5 exclusive features guide covers DualSense haptics, Tempest 3D audio, and load time improvements that have nothing to do with what format your game comes in.

What this means for players who still buy physical

You have until January 2028. That's roughly 17 months to keep buying disc-based games as normal. After that, pre-2028 titles on disc still work fine, so collectors and secondhand buyers aren't locked out of older games.

Here's the thing: the real pinch point is game preservation and ownership. Digital purchases are tied to platform accounts and storefront availability. If a game gets delisted or a storefront shuts down years from now, disc owners have a permanent copy. Digital buyers don't. That concern doesn't go away just because the transition is happening gradually.

Storage management becomes a bigger consideration too. An all-digital library means every game lives on your console's SSD or an external drive. If you're planning your storage setup around upcoming releases, the Saros file size and pre-load date guide is a practical look at what PS5 storage demands look like for a major upcoming title.

important
Discs for games released before January 2028 remain fully playable on PS5 after the cutoff. Only new releases go digital-only, not your existing physical library.

January 2028 is closer than it sounds

With the notice now printed directly on retail packaging, Sony has moved this from a policy announcement to a physical reality. Every new PS5 sold from this point forward ships with the reminder built in.

The transition period gives players time to adjust, but it also signals that Sony isn't leaving any room for a reversal. The small print on the box is the company putting its position in writing, literally.
