On September 12th, 2024, Star Atlas launched the long-anticipated Crew Cards utility in SAGE Labs. This browser-based strategy game sits at the heart of the Star Atlas metaverse, where players command fleets and navigate immersive space-based gameplay. Crew Cards now let players boost crafting efficiency, marking a major step forward for the game's community.

What is Star Atlas?
Star Atlas is a next-gen gaming metaverse built on cutting-edge blockchain tech, real-time graphics, and multiplayer systems. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5's Nanite technology, delivering cinematic-quality visuals. Blockchain integration via Solana creates a largely serverless, secure gameplay environment. Player assets obtained and traded in Star Atlas form an economy that mirrors real-world ownership and value.
Introducing Crew Cards
Crew Cards represent individual crew members in the Star Atlas universe, now separated from their ships and available as standalone NFTs. These cards can be assigned to any ship, adding versatility and strategic depth. Each Crew Card belongs to one of seven species — Sogmians, Mierese, Punaabs, Usturs, Manus Ultima Divina (MUD), Photoli, or Tufa — each with distinct lore.
Beyond species, Crew Cards are sorted by rarity and one of seven aptitudes: Command, Flight, Engineering, Medical, Scientist, Operator, or Hospitality. Players can optimize fleet performance by matching crew members to roles that align with their aptitudes. Assigning a crew member with a Medical aptitude to a Medical role, for example, accelerates their development in that position and improves overall fleet efficiency.

Initial Crew Cards Utility in SAGE Labs
When Crew Packs were airdropped and sold in August 2024, the concept of Crew Cards and their initial utility took shape. One of the primary features now live in SAGE Labs is enhanced crafting efficiency. The more crew members a player has, the faster items craft in-game. As Star Atlas evolves, additional utilities and roles for Crew Cards will roll out, broadening their gameplay impact.

With the Crew Cards utility launch, the game automatically destroyed all fleets on September 12th, sending them back to the Central Space Station for players to reorganize. Improvements to the crew management process also arrived, simplifying the import and withdrawal of Crew Cards. A script shared via the Star Atlas Discord, for instance, enables mass transfer of crew members from Ledger to SAGE.
Beyond SAGE Labs, Crew Cards will factor into Star Atlas' future updates, especially the Unreal Engine 5 release. Players will use their Crew Cards as avatars, building and managing a trainable crew for their ships in an RPG-style mobile app experience.

Component Bundles and Ship Configuration
Another key feature for Star Atlas players is Component Bundles. These bundles contain high-tier ship parts and weapons that were once built into ships but are now offered separately, similar to Crew Cards. While Crew Packs were airdropped in August, Component Bundles will be distributed to eligible holders at a future date, likely when a new game feature launches.
Component Bundles let players upgrade their ships with high-performance parts, sorted by tier. These parts include shield generators, warp drives, thrusters, and weapons systems. Once the Ship Configuration Protocol activates, players can convert their Component Bundles into individual parts or trade them on the galactic marketplace.
After the snapshot date for Component Bundles, new ships purchased from the marketplace will only include basic components — Tier 0 parts. These parts are not tradable and will be automatically replaced when higher-tier components are installed.

Future Developments in Star Atlas
As Star Atlas expands its metaverse, both Crew Cards and Component Bundles will become core assets. With the upcoming Ship Configuration Protocol, ships will shift from semi-fungible tokens to fully customizable NFTs.
Players will personalize their ships, upgrading components to match their playstyle and strategy, deepening the gameplay experience in Star Atlas. The launch of Crew Cards on September 12th represents another significant milestone in Star Atlas' development, giving players new ways to optimize their fleets and engage with the expanding world of SAGE Labs.
