The video game industry is projected to lose 100,000 years of collective experience by the end of 2025, as reported by Amir Satvat, a recognized advocate for professionals in the sector. The estimate comes amid a period of widespread layoffs, with many experienced developers either leaving the industry or remaining without employment. Satvat, who maintains a widely used resource for job seekers in games, shared the projection after analyzing multiple years of community-supplied data.

State of Game Industry Layoffs July 2025

In a recent post, Satvat addressed a question he often receives: how much experience has the game industry lost since 2022. He stated that while he initially avoided answering due to the complexity of the topic, he now feels confident in presenting a data-informed estimate. Drawing from confirmed data for recent years and estimated figures for upcoming months, Satvat concluded that the industry is on track to lose 100,000 years of experience by the end of 2025.

His calculation is based on tracking the number of layoffs and assessing the average years of professional experience among those affected. In 2025 alone, approximately 6,247 individuals are believed to have lost their jobs in the industry. Satvat noted that the figure accounts not only for layoffs but also for those who have since transitioned to other fields or remain unemployed. The cumulative result is a significant drain of knowledge, skills, and leadership from the sector.

Impact on Game Development and Studio Capacity

In an interview with GamesBeat, Satvat emphasized the practical implications of this talent loss, comparing the figure to the equivalent of 40 fully staffed game studios, each employing 500 individuals with an average of five years of experience. He explained that many of the laid-off professionals come from major companies and held roles critical to the development of prominent game franchises. While specific names were withheld to protect privacy, he observed that many of these professionals now remain on the sidelines, unable to find suitable roles in a challenging job market.

The current hiring environment poses additional difficulties. Satvat noted that many affected workers are senior-level talent whose compensation expectations make them harder for studios to rehire during periods of financial restraint. As a result, a large portion of the industry’s skilled workforce is either leaving the field altogether or waiting for opportunities that may not materialize soon.

Nearly Half of Game Experience Potential Lost

According to Satvat, the projected loss of 100,000 years of experience represents about 44 percent of the total "games years" of all those laid off between 2022 and 2025. This percentage underscores the long-term challenges the industry may face in rebuilding its talent base. While some professionals eventually return, many do not, contributing to a permanent reduction in the industry’s collective expertise.

As layoffs continue and financial pressures persist, the game industry faces a complex road ahead. The loss of experienced talent not only affects immediate development capacity but may also influence the quality and scale of future projects. Satvat’s analysis brings attention to the structural shifts taking place in the workforce and the need for sustained efforts to retain and support industry professionals.
