State of USA Gaming Market in April 2025

The United States gaming market struggled through April 2025, posting another month of year-over-year decline. Total industry spending dropped 3% compared to April 2024, with hardware and accessory sales taking the biggest hits. Still, the picture isn't entirely bleak: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered dominated the month's sales charts and crushed the original game's launch performance, while digital console content and subscription services both posted solid gains. The market is contracting, but specific segments are holding up better than the topline numbers suggest.

The U.S. gaming market continued its downward slide in April 2025, with total monthly spending hitting $4.1 billion — down 3% year-over-year. Content sales, which account for most of the industry's revenue, fell 2% to $3.7 billion. Non-mobile subscriptions grew 18%, and digital console game sales climbed 16%, but those gains couldn't offset broader weakness.

Gaming hardware sales fell 8% to $186 million, the lowest figure recorded since July 2020. PlayStation 5 dollar sales dropped 5%, but the console still led in both units and revenue. Nintendo Switch took a beating with a 37% sales decline, while Xbox Series S|X posted 8% growth — the only console showing positive momentum. Accessory spending slipped 2% to $166 million, with the DualSense Midnight Black controller leading the category. For the first four months of 2025, total industry revenue reached $17.8 billion, down 8% compared to the same period in 2024.

Game Sales, Mobile and Consumer Behavior

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was April's best-selling game by a wide margin. It moved more units in one month than the 2006 original sold in its first 15 months, and generated more revenue in under 30 days than the original managed in its first 14. The remaster immediately became the third-best-selling game of 2025 year-to-date.

Forza Horizon 5 ranked second, boosted by its PlayStation 5 launch. MLB: The Show 25 took third, though digital sales for Nintendo and Xbox versions weren't included. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle jumped from 118th to 6th after hitting PlayStation 5. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 didn't crack the top 20 overall due to missing digital sales data, but its physical release landed at 22nd on PlayStation platforms.

Mobile gaming revenue dipped slightly in April following a similar decline in March. MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, and Candy Crush Saga remained the top earners. Gossip Harbor: Merge & Story posted the fastest revenue growth among mobile titles, up 9.8% month-over-month.

Platform-Specific Performance and Rankings

Microsoft published four of April's five best-selling games. On PlayStation, Microsoft-published titles held five of the top ten sales spots — a win for both companies through increased exposure and platform revenue.

Call of Duty HQ led monthly active users on both PlayStation and Xbox. RoboCop: Rogue City and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre saw notable MAU jumps after joining PS Plus. On Xbox, The Elder Scrolls: Online climbed to the second-highest sales rank, with Minecraft in third. Oblivion Remastered entered Xbox MAU rankings immediately thanks to its day-one Game Pass availability.

Nintendo's top 10 chart stayed mostly static, with The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy as the only new entry. On Steam, Schedule I, R.E.P.O., and Counter-Strike 2 led MAU rankings. Oblivion Remastered debuted at fifth, and Path of Exile II showed strong engagement.

Industry Outlook

The U.S. gaming market is contracting, but pockets of strength remain. Oblivion Remastered's performance proves there's real demand for quality remasters when done right. Cross-platform publishing, subscription services, and mobile engagement will continue to shape the market through the rest of 2025, even as overall spending trends downward.
