The ESRB has quietly rated Stellar Blade for Nintendo Switch 2, and the listing carries two pieces of good news: a release date announcement is almost certainly on the way, and the Switch 2 port appears to be arriving uncensored.
What the ESRB listing actually tells us
The Switch 2 edition carries the same M rating as the PS5 and PC versions of Shift Up's action game. The content descriptors are identical, covering "blood and gore, partial nudity, sexual themes, strong language, and violence." The only change from the existing rating is the removal of "also includes In-Game Purchases" from the descriptor blurb, which makes sense given the Switch 2 version is a fresh release rather than an ongoing live-service title.
Here's the thing: publishers typically don't pursue age ratings until a release window is close enough to matter. The game was announced for Switch 2 during the Nintendo Direct around Summer Game Fest time with a vague "2026" window attached. With the year already past its halfway point, a concrete date has to be coming.
No Dispatch situation to worry about
The rating also puts to rest any concern about content being stripped for Nintendo's platform. Earlier this year, Dispatch from AdHoc Studio launched on Switch 2 with its mature content locked behind mandatory censorship. Neither Nintendo nor AdHoc clearly claimed responsibility for the decision, and while AdHoc eventually released additional content to address some of the cuts, the situation never fully resolved. It left players understandably skeptical about mature titles arriving on the platform intact.
Stellar Blade has always been a game that leans into its violence and the design of protagonist Eve without apology. The ESRB listing for the Switch 2 version explicitly describes "close-up images of impalement, dismemberment, and decapitation" during combat, "breasts that jiggle during combat," and even flags a single use of strong language. That's the same language used for the PS5 version. Nothing has been softened.
What most players miss about this port's context
Stellar Blade arrived on PS5 in April 2024 and came to PC in June 2025, where it immediately attracted an enormous modding community. The Switch 2 version will be the third platform release for a game that has had two years to build its audience, and it arrives at an interesting moment. Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, the follow-up from Shift Up, has been confirmed but is still in early development. The director has also publicly acknowledged that Eve as a character lacked narrative depth, with plans to course-correct for Blood Rain.
For anyone who hasn't played the original yet, the Switch 2 port is the logical entry point before the sequel eventually arrives. The portability angle matters here too: Stellar Blade's combat is stylish and fast, the kind of thing that works well in shorter handheld sessions.
The absence of in-game purchases in the Switch 2 rating is also worth noting. The PS5 version launched with paid cosmetic DLC, so it will be interesting to see whether the Switch 2 release bundles that content or simply launches without it.
What comes next
A formal release date reveal is the logical next step. The ESRB rating is a procedural requirement that publishers complete in the weeks before a release date is set or announced publicly. Shift Up and Nintendo have not confirmed a specific window beyond "2026," but that window is narrowing fast.
If you want to get ahead of the game before the Switch 2 version drops, the Stellar Blade guides collection covers everything from boss strategies to collectible locations. There's also a broader library of gaming guides if you're picking up other Switch 2 titles in the meantime. A release date reveal feels like a matter of when, not if, at this point.
