Modular Underwater Base - Subnautica 2 ...

Two million copies in 12 hours. That's not a typo.

Subnautica 2 hit Early Access on May 14, 2026, and Unknown Worlds wasted no time flexing the numbers. The developer confirmed the two million sales figure publicly, noting the game had already crossed one million within a single hour of launch before doubling that by the half-day mark.

Numbers that put the original to shame

The concurrent player count tells the bigger story. Across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox, Subnautica 2 peaked at 651,000 simultaneous players, which Unknown Worlds confirmed is nine times larger than the original Subnautica's launch peak. For context, that kind of cross-platform concurrent figure puts it in rare company for a survival games launch.

Steam's own charts reflected the chaos. Subnautica 2 sat at the top of the Top Sellers list above Counter-Strike 2 and the early Premium Edition launch of Forza Horizon 6. The launch halo effect even pulled the original Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero to fifth and sixth on the same chart, which is a genuinely rare thing to see.

What players are actually saying

The Steam review count stood at 18,620 positive reviews against 1,526 negative ones at the time of reporting, landing a 92% "Very Positive" rating. The positive reviews lean hard into comparisons with the first game. One Steam user put it plainly: "Subnautica 2 is like Subnautica 1 but if Subnautica 1 was a cheese pizza and you finally added all the toppings. Both are objectively good but Subnautica 2 also gave you double bacon and cheese for free."

Another reviewer, coming in with measured expectations for an Early Access title, noted they "was not disappointed" after assuming the game would be more of the same refined experience from the original.

Negative reviews aren't about the game itself so much as the surrounding conditions. Players flagged the terms of service and EULA language as unusually restrictive. The standard Early Access complaints about missing features also showed up, and a notable chunk of the negative feedback targets the absence of an FOV slider, which is causing motion sickness for some players.

What this launch actually means

Here's the thing: Early Access launches at this scale are genuinely uncommon. Most games that hit Early Access do so quietly, building a player base over months. Subnautica 2 front-loaded a staggering amount of attention in a single day, which creates both opportunity and pressure for Unknown Worlds.

The key here is that the original Subnautica spent years in Early Access before its full release, and that process produced one of the most beloved survival games of the past decade. The sequel is starting from a much higher floor.

With the first weekend still ahead at the time of these numbers dropping, the peak player count and sales figures will likely climb further before settling into the game's long-term baseline.
