Subnautica 2 - Announcement Trailer ...

Subnautica 2 launches into Early Access today, May 14, 2026, and it is doing a lot more than swapping out the scenery. Unknown Worlds has built a new planet, added 4-player co-op for the first time in the series, introduced dynamic ocean currents that can drag you into the deep without warning, and overhauled base building from the ground up. This guide breaks down every confirmed new feature so you know exactly what you're getting into before you dive.

What new planet does Subnautica 2 take place on?

Forget planet 4546B. Subnautica 2 takes place on Zazura, a completely new oceanic world. You play as a passenger aboard the CICADA, an Alterra colony ship carrying 40,000 people, which the dropreference.com source describes as 250 times larger than the Aurora from the first game. The crash of the CICADA is framed as the worst accident in Alterra's history.

According to Unknown Worlds Design Lead Anthony Gallegos, the decision to use a new planet was deliberate: returning to 4546B would have robbed players of the uncertainty that makes Subnautica tense. On Zazura, you have no frame of reference. An unknown sound could be harmless or lethal, and that ambiguity is the point.

The world is entirely hand-crafted, not procedurally generated. At Early Access launch, the game includes at least two regions divided into biomes and sub-biomes, with more regions confirmed to arrive through the 2 to 3 year Early Access period before version 1.0.

What is the 4-player co-op system and how does it work?

This is the biggest mechanical addition to the series. Subnautica 2 supports up to 4-player cooperative play, available from day one in Early Access. Solo play remains fully intact and optional, so the oppressive loneliness of the original is still available if you want it.

Unknown Worlds has confirmed several co-op-specific systems. A proximity-based inventory sharing mechanic lets you pull resources from an allied locker when you are nearby during crafting, removing the need for clunky trade menus. You can play in first-person or third-person with friends, and the game supports crossplay between PC and Xbox.

Starting a multiplayer session is designed to be low-friction. You can convert an existing solo save to multiplayer, start a fresh co-op game, or invite friends through your platform's friends list or Subnautica 2's own cross-platform friends list. A dive elevator shown in developer footage lets groups descend together and send resources back up to the surface.

What is the Tadpole and what vehicles are confirmed?

The Tadpole is the new starting vehicle in Subnautica 2, replacing the role the Seamoth filled in the original. It supports customizable attachments with different functional roles, including options focused on extra storage and others built for speed.

The Prawn Suit (the underwater mecha from the original) is also confirmed for Early Access. As for the Seamoth and Cyclops equivalents, Unknown Worlds has not specified direct replacements yet. Below Zero replaced those two with the Seatruck to mixed reception, so what Subnautica 2 does beyond the Tadpole and Prawn Suit is something to watch as Early Access updates roll out.

What are the new creatures and who is the Collector Leviathan?

Because Zazura is a completely new planet, every creature in Subnautica 2 is new. There are no Reaper Leviathans here. Trailers have shown giant crabs and massive squids among the fauna, but the standout new predator is the Collector Leviathan.

The Collector Leviathan is described as the first hostile leviathan in the game and is powered by Unreal Engine 5 AI. It reacts to light and sound in real time, has fully simulated tentacle animations, can use shockwave attacks, and has what the developers called a "terrifying roar." Subnautica 2's lead game designer has said publicly that working on this creature gave him new phobias after the project helped cure his original sea terror.

Unknown Worlds has also teased a Cthulhu-inspired Leviathan with four tentacles designed to grab, crush, and swat players, referenced in PC Gamer's coverage of developer blogs.

What is new about base building and crafting?

Base building has received the most significant overhaul of any returning system. The new procedural construction system means you are no longer locked into basic shapes when building. A developer blog described the system as "challenging" and "logic-heavy," with future updates planned to add paint options, color customization for interiors and lights, and the ability to toggle lighting on and off.

Window shapes, decorations, and layouts all have more options than previous games. All of this works in co-op, meaning four players can build together with each person taking a different role: resource gathering, construction, deep exploration, or keeping watch for Leviathans.

Crafting tools are confirmed functional at launch alongside the base building system. Unknown Worlds has acknowledged looking at quality-of-life improvements from other recent survival games to address friction points from the original.

What does the Early Access include and how long will it last?

Unknown Worlds has been transparent about the Early Access scope. Here is what is confirmed at launch:

  • Several playable biomes from day one (exact count not specified in sources)
  • 4-player co-op and solo modes
  • Various creatures including Leviathans
  • The opening chapters of the narrative (full story planned for version 1.0)
  • Functional crafting and base building
  • The Tadpole and Prawn Suit vehicles

The studio estimates 2 to 3 years of Early Access before version 1.0, based on their experience with the original Subnautica, which spent 3 years in Early Access. Unknown Worlds has confirmed the price will increase after the Early Access launch period. All updates through to version 1.0 are included with the base purchase.

The game is available on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, and on Xbox Series X/S. It is also available day one on Xbox Game Pass through the Game Preview program. PS5 support has not been announced for Early Access, though GamesRadar notes the first Subnautica eventually came to PS5.
