Sumo Digital and Arm Explore AI-Driven PC-Quality Graphics on Mobile

Sumo Digital has teamed up with chip designer Arm to test whether AI can push mobile gaming visuals closer to what you'd expect on a desktop. The partnership centers on Arm's neural technology, which integrates dedicated AI accelerators directly into Arm GPUs. The goal is to make smartphones and tablets capable of rendering graphics that were previously too demanding for mobile hardware.

Arm first revealed the technology in August 2025, with GPUs featuring it slated to arrive in 2026. The AI-driven neural processing could let developers port graphics techniques from PC to mobile without the usual performance compromises. Sumo Digital is one of the first studios to run the tech in a full production environment, testing how it holds up in actual game development rather than controlled demos.

Early Testing and Developer Insights

Sumo Digital's work with the technology will be shown at Arm's developer summit during GDC 2026 in San Francisco. The studio is figuring out how developers can practically integrate AI-enhanced rendering into mobile titles, and the summit will include live demonstrations of what the tech can do.

Gary Dunn, CEO of Sumo Digital, called the project a technical turning point for mobile gaming. "Arm neural technology will represent a shift for what's possible with video games on mobile," Dunn said. The company is focused on stress-testing the system and identifying where it makes the most difference in real-world development.

Chris Bergey, EVP of Arm's Edge AI business unit, emphasized the challenge the partnership is tackling. "Bringing desktop-quality graphics to mobile has been one of the industry's toughest problems. Arm neural technology will unlock immersive experiences for players. Our work with Sumo Digital will help developers push visual quality further on mobile," Bergey said.

The Future of AI-Enhanced Mobile Games

The collaboration reflects a broader shift in mobile gaming, where AI is increasingly used to close the gap between mobile and console visuals. If Arm's neural technology delivers, mobile games could start approaching the fidelity of PC and console titles, giving players experiences that were previously out of reach on handheld devices.
