Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches on December 3, 2026, with The Tarnished Mirror, a new four-mission campaign made by the team behind Thief: The Black Parade.

Nightdive Studios and Eidos-Montréal are developing the release, with Atari publishing. Pre-orders are open now, with digital and physical editions available.

The Tarnished Mirror connects Garrett’s first two games

The Tarnished Mirror takes place between Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age. Its creators previously released The Black Parade in 2023 as a fan-made expansion for Thief: Gold.

The story begins with an apparently straightforward theft before turning into imprisonment, uneasy alliances, and a descent into a drowned necropolis. An expanded enemy roster accompanies a campaign that pushes into Thief’s supernatural horror side. Garrett has more to worry about than guards protecting somebody else’s valuables.

The original missions return with Thief: Gold

Looking Glass Studios’ 1998 original puts Garrett, a thief trained by the secretive Keepers, in unscripted, maze-like levels where light and sound shape how safely he can move. NPCs can hear him, speak, and raise alarms. Staying out of sight is only half the job.

The remaster includes the original game’s 12 missions and the three additional missions from 1999’s Thief: Gold, whose additions also introduce five enemy types. Each mission has three difficulty settings with different objectives, giving repeat visits more substance than simply running the same job again.

Garrett’s equipment reinforces that approach: a blackjack for knocking enemies unconscious, a sword when a fight breaks out, and specialist arrows that support covert work. Thief’s non-confrontational gameplay makes slipping past its occupants a natural aim. Collecting treasure without too many casualties is part of the appeal.

KEX upgrades the controls and mission access

Nightdive’s KEX Engine powers the remaster. Textures, models, and animations receive visual updates, while small fixes adjust the original level designs.

The practical additions cover both playing with a controller and returning to old jobs:

  • Modern controller support includes rumble and motion/gyro controls.
  • A weapon and item wheel provides quick access to tools and gadgets.
  • A mission selector lets you replay missions you have already completed.
  • Built-in custom campaign support accommodates player-made content.
  • Trophies and a Vault of behind-the-scenes material add extras outside the main missions.

Console, PC, and the return of the trapezoid box

The console release covers PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2. PC players can get the remaster through Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG.

Digital buyers have two editions to choose between. The more expensive option adds supporting artwork, music, and reading material.

Standard Edition$29.99The game
Digital Deluxe Edition$34.99The game, an artwork Remaster Diary, the soundtrack, and a preview of the Thief: The Dark Project novelization

Clear River Games is distributing physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Switch 2. Options include Standard, Steelbook, and Deluxe Trapezoid editions. The $69.99 Deluxe Trapezoid package contains the game, a steelbook, a booklet, and a physical Remaster Diary inside a recreation of the original 1998 trapezoid-shaped box. That packaging is a particularly specific nod to the PC original, even if these physical releases are for consoles.
