Two More Web3 Games to be Discontinued

In 2025, the web3 gaming industry continues to face mounting challenges, with two more titles—Realms of Alurya and Wonder Wars—shutting down due to financial constraints. Both games, built on the Ronin network, have officially ceased development, citing funding shortfalls and broader market instability. Their closures add to a growing list of blockchain-based games that have gone offline this year, underscoring the volatility of the web3 gaming landscape as developers grapple with unsustainable business models and unmet performance benchmarks.

Two Web3 Games Shutdown

Two more blockchain games, Realms of Alurya and Wonder Wars, are officially going offline after running into major financial hurdles. Both games, built on the Ronin network, announced the end of operations in late May, joining a growing list of web3 titles that have shut down in 2025.

Wonder Wars and Hello Monster Pull the Plug

On May 29, the team behind Wonder Wars and its developer Hello Monster confirmed that both the game and studio would shut down completely. Despite strong community engagement, the developers said they couldn't hit the business benchmarks needed to continue. In a message posted on X, Hello Monster stated, "We weren't able to secure the necessary funding to develop a live service game for the coming years."

The studio also scrapped plans for its planned utility token, citing ethical concerns about launching something with no long-term value. "It wouldn't be honest to launch a utility token that would have no real use," the team said. "That's not who we are. That's not in our DNA. We are game developers." While the studio is shutting down, players will still have access to Wonder Wars until the end of June. After that, servers will be taken offline for good.

Realms of Alurya Hits Pause After Publisher Exit

Just a day earlier, Realms of Alurya entered maintenance mode following the collapse of its partnership with Treasure. Creative Director Oscar Soler revealed the studio lost critical milestone-based funding when the agreement was unexpectedly terminated. Only half of the promised financial support was delivered before the publisher walked away. The timing of the termination couldn't have been worse. The news arrived just a week before the game's Hunt & Mint event—its biggest content release to date.

The team quickly moved the game over to the Ronin blockchain and pushed ahead with the event, hoping to attract investor interest. However, the event fell short of expectations, and the studio was unable to secure additional funding. In a candid statement to the community, Soler admitted the team had relied too heavily on its publisher. "We should have had a secondary source of funding. We've learned our lesson the hard way," he said. The game is currently offline, with the team reviewing new partnership proposals in the hope of restarting development down the line.

A Tough Year for Web3 Gaming

The shutdowns of Realms of Alurya and Wonder Wars reflect a larger trend hitting web3 gaming in 2025. Multiple titles have gone dark in recent months as studios struggle to secure sustainable funding in a volatile market. Nyan Heroes, a Solana-based shooter with over a million players during testing, was recently shelved. Blast Royale is ending development in June, while Rumble Kong League and Ember Sword have also folded.

Even established names haven't been immune. The Walking Dead: Empires, published by Gala Games, will sunset on July 31, three years after it began development. NFT holders will receive compensation in the form of digital assets from other Gala titles. Meanwhile, Shatterline, a sci-fi shooter, will drop its multiplayer mode and pivot to a single-player experience by the end of June.

What's Next?

The back-to-back shutdowns of Wonder Wars and Realms of Alurya are the latest signs that the web3 gaming bubble is still searching for solid ground. While the promise of blockchain-based economies and player-owned assets once fueled major hype, developers are finding that community interest alone isn't enough to keep projects afloat.

As the web3 gaming space matures, only projects with sustainable business models, strong user retention, and consistent funding are likely to survive. For now, all eyes are on the few remaining games to see who can weather the storm—and who might be next to go offline.
