What is Champions Tactics?
Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is Ubisoft's experimental PC tactical RPG that pulls from classic strategy board games and modern turn-based combat. Players assemble teams of mythical champions and fight other players in the dark fantasy world of Grimoria.
Ubisoft partnered with Oasys and double jump.tokyo to build Champions Tactics after announcing the project at IVS Kyoto nearly a year ago. Nicolas Pouard, VP of Ubisoft's Strategic Innovation Lab, says the web3 elements should stay invisible so players can focus on the strategy and fun.
Pouard explained, "With Champions Tactics, we aim for web3 technology to seamlessly fade into the background, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in the fun and strategy of the game." The Champion Creation Forge recreates the feel of collecting physical miniatures in digital form.

How NFTs work in Champions Tactics
The game centers on 75,000 Champions, each with unique traits and abilities. You pick three Champions per match and optimize your squad for competitive play. The Forge lets you combine existing Champions' powers and traits to customize your roster and climb the leaderboards.
Ubisoft's initial 10K PFP collection, The Warlords, was the most anticipated mint of Q3 2023. The full 75,000 Champions mint in July 2024 broke multiple records. The game now has over 100,000 followers on X and 50,000 Discord members. Closed alpha and beta tests with thousands of players helped refine the mechanics.
Executive producer Sylvain Loe-Mie says Champions Tactics is a real game first, not a crypto project dressed up as one. "This isn't GameFi—it's about pure, immersive gameplay that draws players in while giving them the freedom to own their assets and shape the game's future," Loe-Mie said. The dev team includes people who worked on Assassin's Creed, Heroes of Might & Magic, and Far Cry, and the goal is to make a game that works for everyone, not just web3 enthusiasts.
What Oasys brings to the table
Oasys is handling the blockchain infrastructure for Champions Tactics. The partnership aims to blend traditional game design with web3 features without forcing players to think about the tech layer.
Ryo Matsubara, representative director of Oasys, said, "The official release of Grimoria Chronicles will raise the bar for web3 gaming while demonstrating the enduring appeal of the Ubisoft brand." You can follow Champions Tactics on social media or join the Discord for updates.
