Wildcard, an upcoming esports MOBA, has set March 14th as the date for its first closed alpha playtest. Access is limited to NFT holders. Developed by Paul and Katy Drake Bettner's team at Playful Studios, the game splits its design into two distinct layers: a traditional free-to-play experience and a blockchain-powered metagame that runs parallel to it. The whitepaper is out, WC tokens have been introduced, and the testing phase is about to begin.

WC Tokens and Airlock
20% of the total WC token supply has been distributed, but these tokens are locked under what the team calls "airlock." Trading is disabled for now. The system is designed to build awareness and establish liquidity before tokens can change hands. The goal is to cultivate a stable holder base before the ecosystem goes live.
Web2 Approach and Gameplay
Wildcard is not a web3 game. It's a free-to-play title for PC and consoles built around player customization. Revenue comes from cosmetic items like skins and off-chain card packs, not blockchain mechanics. The game integrates with standard web2 platforms and storefronts. There are no play-to-win mechanics. Competitive balance stays intact.
Web3 Metagame Wildclash
The blockchain side lives in Wildclash, a separate metagame aimed at collectors, speculators, and players who want deeper engagement. Hosted on Thousands.tv, Wildclash uses the WC token and rewards participation. Players and spectators earn tokens based on activity, creating an additional loop for the most invested community members.
Playful Studios is allocating 100% of the 88,888,888 WC token supply to the community. No team reserve. This differs sharply from most blockchain gaming projects and signals a focus on building an active player and spectator base rather than extracting value upfront.

Looking Ahead to Wildcard's Launch
The March 14th playtest will be the first real test of how this dual-layer structure holds up. Core gameplay stays in web2 territory, while the web3 metagame runs alongside it for those who want it. Whether this separation works or just adds unnecessary complexity remains to be seen. More details are available through Wildcard's official channels as the game moves toward launch.
