Overview
Outward 2 is a survival action RPG developed and published by Nine Dots Studio, set in the world of Aurai. Players take the role of an ordinary commoner with no innate power and no special destiny, navigating a world where hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and hostile weather are as lethal as any monster. The game enters Early Access on February 7, 2027, on PC via Steam.
The design philosophy is deliberate and unambiguous: Outward 2 does not want players to feel like heroes. Enemies are bigger and meaner. There is no fast travel, no mounts, and no matchmaking. What the game offers instead is a dense, systems-driven experience where preparation, knowledge, and patience determine survival more than reflexes alone.

Gameplay and mechanics
Outward 2 builds its survival RPG loop around a set of interconnected systems that all carry real weight:

- Armor material affects weather resistance, not just defense
- Backpack weight influences movement and must be dropped in combat
- Food, drink, and sleep are active survival variables
- Skills are purchased from trainers scattered across Aurai
- Up to three classes can be combined simultaneously
Every weapon type has its own moveset, and dual-wielding opens combinations like sword and shield, dual axes, mace and pistol, or lantern and chakram. Spellcasting follows the same involved logic as the original Outward: players combine actions and reagents to unlock arcane abilities, whether that means manipulating a Sigil of Darkness or inscribing runic words for protection. The result is a combat system that rewards experimentation over memorized inputs.

What happens when you lose?
Death in Outward 2 is not a simple screen wipe. Getting knocked out triggers a randomized outcome: a passing traveler might revive the player, or they could wake up in town, injured and robbed. Every defeat carries narrative consequence, which makes each encounter feel genuinely risky.
Constant auto-saving removes the option to reload a better outcome, keeping players accountable for their decisions. For those who want the absolute harshest version of this, Hardcore mode adds a 20% chance of permanent save deletion on every defeat. That number is not decorative.
Character creation and world
Character creation in Outward 2 goes beyond stat allocation. Players choose one of three starting scenarios: a miner in the northern mountains of Tramontane, a homeowner in the underground city of Haboob, or a vagrant at Simeon's Bastion. Each scenario sets a different context for the opening hours. On top of that, a character background (Aberdeen family, worshipper of Elatt, or a self-described deadbeat) and personality traits like Hoarder, Gourmet, or Lone Wolf each affect starting gear, dialogue options, and initial aptitudes.
The world itself carries a political and philosophical weight. The Immaculates, once feared as a destructive force called the Scourge, have been pacified by a runic spell and now seek acceptance in a world that has not forgiven them. Faction choices shape how players engage with this story, from joining a mercenary company to assisting a society of historians or pursuing humanitarian work.

Multiplayer and co-op
Outward 2 supports both online and split-screen co-op throughout the full game. Players can drop in and out of each other's worlds at any point, whether for a single session or the entire journey. There is no built-in matchmaking, so finding partners happens through community channels. The co-op design treats survival as a shared responsibility rather than a spectator sport, making the game's demanding systems feel collaborative rather than punishing when played with others.
