Permafrost

Introduction

The moon is gone, winter never ends, and somewhere out there a radio signal leads to a long-lost friend. Permafrost is a story-driven open-world survival game from SpaceRocket Games that strips away the noise of most survival titles and replaces it with something quieter and more threatening: relentless cold, genuine scarcity, and a world that demands preparation before every single step outside.

Overview

Permafrost drops players into a near-future Earth where a cascade of catastrophes, culminating in the literal shattering of the moon, has locked the planet in permanent winter. The player character is a Rook, an engineer with the skills to rebuild broken technology but next to no experience surviving the wilderness. That tension between competence and vulnerability sits at the heart of everything Permafrost does. Released into Early Access on 9 October 2026, the game is published by Toplitz Productions and developed by SpaceRocket Games.

The world stretches across frozen city ruins that bleed into open wilderness, and the silence between those spaces carries real weight. Permafrost deliberately avoids the constant-gunfire loop that defines so many survival games. Resources are scarce, weather systems are punishing, and every expedition requires planning rather than improvisation. Frostbite and storms are not cosmetic hazards; they shape routing decisions from the moment a player steps out of shelter.

Faction-controlled territories add a layer of social navigation on top of the physical survival challenge. Players can forge alliances or push through hostile zones, and the choices made there ripple into how accessible certain areas and resources become.

Gameplay and mechanics

Permafrost's core survival loop centers on a few interlocking systems:

  • Temperature and frostbite management
  • Shelter construction and network-building
  • Hunting, scavenging, and crafting
  • Machine repair and technology restoration
  • Faction diplomacy and territory navigation

Progression is exploration-gated rather than time-gated. Players push deeper into the frozen world by restoring abandoned shelters and repairing broken machines, which in turn unlock access to new regions and recipes. There are no experience bars ticking up in the background; capability grows because the player physically reclaimed it from the ruins.

The dog companion is more than a narrative flourish. Rescued from the ruins early in the game, the dog scouts ahead, carries supplies, and provides danger warnings that give players an additional layer of situational awareness without breaking the grounded tone the game works hard to maintain.

What does co-op add to the survival experience?

Permafrost supports 1 to 4 players, and the co-op design leans into specialization rather than difficulty reduction. The cold does not scale back because there are more survivors; it stays exactly as brutal. What changes is the ability to divide labor, with one player managing shelter repairs while another hunts or scavenges a different zone. Building a shelter network across a wide area becomes genuinely collaborative rather than just faster.

Solo play remains a fully supported and tonally distinct experience. The silence of the frozen world lands harder without teammates, and the dog companion carries more narrative significance when it is the only company available.

World and setting

The year is 2035 in a timeline where the catastrophe hit hard and fast. Communication infrastructure collapsed, society fractured along survival lines, and whatever factions remain are defined by how they chose to endure rather than rebuild. The Rook's entry point into this world, chasing a radio signal from a missing friend, gives the open-world exploration a personal anchor that pure survival sandboxes often lack.

City ruins transitioning into open wilderness give the world a sense of scale and history without requiring exposition dumps. The scarcity is environmental storytelling: an empty shelf in a frozen apartment says more than a loading-screen lore entry. Permafrost commits to that restraint, letting the cold and the quiet do the narrative heavy lifting across the entire open-world survival experience.
