What are the three Hallowed Concepts skin challenges?

The Hallowed Concepts DLC for Risk of Rain 2 adds 18 character-specific skins, and every single one requires you to earn it. No chest drops, no random unlocks. Each skin ties to a specific survivor and one of three challenges, with the first group carrying a hard deadline that ends your window permanently if you miss it. Knowing which challenge belongs to which survivor before you start a run saves a lot of wasted time.

What are the three Hallowed Concepts skin challenges?

The 18 skins split across three groups of six survivors. Each group has its own unlock condition, and the survivor you play determines which skin you receive. Finishing a challenge as Bandit unlocks Bandit's skin only.

Group 1: How to unlock Dying to Meet You skins

Survivors: Commando, Huntress, Acrid, Seeker, CHEF, Enforcer

This is the only group with a time limit, which makes it the one most players fail on their first attempt. The window closes permanently once the fourth Teleporter event completes, so plan your route before the run starts.

What you need before entering Soulbound Threshold

You need the N'Tormat and at least one N'Tormat Page to activate a Shrine of Descent. The most reliable way to get both is visiting the Bazaar Between Time, dropping into the pit, and interacting with the Trial Gong. Complete the Trial and you walk out with the N'Tormat and a Page.

  1. Acquire the N'Tormat and at least one N'Tormat Page from Wake events or Trials.
  2. Locate the Shrine of Descent on stage 2 or stage 3.
  3. Activate the shrine, then complete the Teleporter event on that stage.
  4. Enter the Ritual Portal that appears after the event.
  5. Inside Soulbound Threshold, climb the ramps and activate the central console.
  6. Clear the combat waves and defeat the final boss.
  7. Confirm the challenge notification appears before moving on.

The run does not end here. You can continue playing after clearing Soulbound Threshold without needing to defeat Mithrix for the skin to count.

Why does the skin stay locked after clearing?

Two mistakes account for most failed attempts. First, the fourth Teleporter event already completed before you entered Soulbound Threshold. Second, you cleared the encounter with the wrong survivor. Each of the six challenges is named after the specific survivor that must complete it. Double-check the completion notification when you exit. If it does not appear, verify your Teleporter count and your survivor selection.

Group 2: How to unlock Memento Mori skins

Survivors: Bandit, Engineer, Artificer, REX, Captain, Acolyte

Group 2 uses the same Soulbound Threshold entrance as Group 1, but the objective goes further. Completing the normal boss rush is just the first half. After that, you need to open a hidden door and defeat a second boss beyond it.

There is no stage deadline here, so you have room to build properly before committing.

Getting the Reincarnation Page

The hidden door only opens with the Reincarnation Page, a specific N'Tormat Page that comes from Trials or Shrines of Compulsion. Completing a Trial does not guarantee Reincarnation will appear as a reward option, so check your inventory before entering Soulbound Threshold. Having the N'Tormat and a different Page is enough to enter the encounter, but it will not open the door.

  1. Collect the N'Tormat and the Reincarnation Page from Trials or Shrines of Compulsion.
  2. Activate a Shrine of Descent, complete the Teleporter event, and enter Soulbound Threshold.
  3. Clear the full boss rush and defeat the final boss as normal.
  4. After the fight, approach the central console. Wait for the message: "N'tormat shudders in anticipation."
  5. Select Reincarnation from your Pages and activate it at that location.
  6. A large door opens behind the ordinary exit portal.
  7. Walk through the door and cross the water toward the additional boss arena.
  8. Defeat the secret boss to unlock your survivor's skin.

The hidden encounter is harder than the standard boss rush. Going in with a build that barely survived the first fight is a recipe for losing both attempts in the same run. Prioritize single-target damage and enough recovery to keep fighting through two full encounters back to back.

For Acolyte's Memento Mori, Acolyte must be unlocked first, then played as the active survivor in a separate attempt. Reviving Acolyte during another survivor's run does not satisfy her own challenge.

Group 3: How to unlock Against All Odds skins

Survivors: MUL-T, Mercenary, Loader, Railgunner, Void Fiend, False Son

Group 3 skips Soulbound Threshold entirely. The only requirement is finishing a run while carrying at least 10 Hexes. No specific boss, no deadline. That flexibility makes it the most forgiving group on paper, but 10 Hexes stack up as detriments that actively make the run harder.

How do you get enough Hexes?

Two sources provide Hexes during a run:

  • Concept Reliquaries: Interactables that reward Hexes directly. Picking up a Sale Star before opening them can double the Hexes received.
  • Hallowed Shrines: After Teleporter events, select Embrace Death to receive 3 Hexes per use. Shrines appear more consistently once you have the N'Tormat.

Count your actual Hex inventory after each acquisition rather than estimating based on how many shrines you have used. Three Embrace Death selections from zero gives you 9 Hexes, not 10. You still need at least one more source before finishing.

Build before you commit to 10 Hexes

Hexes are detriments. Each one imposes a penalty, and the cumulative effect of carrying 10 can gut survivability, restrict visibility, or break abilities you depend on. Establish your damage output and defensive options first, then collect toward the target total as your build can absorb the penalties.

The goal is to finish with 10 Hexes still held, not to grab 10 as fast as possible. A run that falls apart on stage 4 because the penalties became unmanageable does not count.

Completing the run

Two endings qualify:

  • Mithrix victory: Defeat Mithrix and complete the escape sequence while holding at least 10 Hexes.
  • Obliteration: Loop into the required later stages, enter the Celestial Portal, and obliterate while holding at least 10 Hexes.

Enforcer and Acolyte Monsoon Mastery skins

Separate from the 18 Hallowed Concepts challenge skins, Enforcer and Acolyte each have a Mastery appearance tied to Monsoon difficulty.

  • Enforcer: Mastery requires completing a run or obliterating on Monsoon as Enforcer. Enforcer is available from the start of the DLC.
  • Acolyte: Mastery requires unlocking Acolyte first, then completing a run or obliterating on Monsoon as Acolyte.

Rainstorm and Drizzle victories do not count. These are entirely separate from the three challenge groups. Earning Enforcer: Dying to Meet You does not progress the Mastery requirement, and defeating the Reincarnation secret boss as Acolyte does not replace her Monsoon condition.

For more on everything the DLC adds, the Risk of Rain 2 strategy guides cover survivor unlocks, Trials, and skill challenges in full detail. If you enjoy this style of roguelike shooter games, the collection has plenty more to work through once the skins are sorted.
