Scrap Mechanic launched its full 1.0 release with the biggest tool roster the game has ever had. Eleven tools total, spread across utility, construction, and combat, and getting them all sorted early sets the pace for everything that follows. A few are handed to you immediately, but the rest require specific crafting recipes that demand you gather the right materials before you can even think about endgame content.
Which tools are available by default?
Three tools require zero crafting and are available from the moment you start a survival run. The Handbook gives you access to crafting and building reference information throughout your playthrough. The Lift lets you create builds that are not anchored to the ground, which becomes essential once you start making vehicles and mobile structures. The Sledgehammer handles pushing loose items around your workspace.
These three are your starting foundation. The Lift in particular is something you will use constantly, so get comfortable with it before anything else.

What are all 11 tools and their recipes?
The table below covers every tool in Scrap Mechanic 1.0, what it does, and exactly what you need to craft it.

How should you prioritize crafting tools?
Not every tool demands equal urgency. The construction tools, specifically the Weld Tool, Connect Tool, and Clay Gun, should come first. You will need them for builds long before combat becomes a serious concern. The Weld Tool recipe is light on materials at 10 Metal Block Level 2 and 2 Component Kit, making it an easy early grab.
The Spud Gun sits at the lower end of the weapon tier in terms of recipe cost (50 Metal Block Level 1 and 5 Component Kit), so it makes sense to pick that up before committing to the heavier weapon recipes. The Spudling Gun and Spud Shotgun both demand 50 Metal Block Level 2 and 10 Component Kit, so they come later naturally once your resource stockpile grows.
The Fire Launcher shares the same core recipe as the Spud Shotgun (50 Metal Block Level 2 and 10 Component Kit), but its arcing fireball mechanic makes it a different kind of weapon entirely. After testing both against groups of enemies, the Fire Launcher rewards players who understand trajectory, while the Spud Shotgun is more forgiving at close range.
What materials do you need to farm first?
Looking across all 11 recipes, a clear pattern emerges. Metal Block Level 2 appears in six different tool recipes, making it the single most important material to stockpile. Component Kit shows up in eight recipes at varying quantities. These two materials should be your primary farming targets from the start.
Scrap Metal Block is used only in the Connect Tool and Scrap Spud Gun recipes, so it is less of a bottleneck. Circuit Board appears only in the Connect Tool recipe. Cable Roll is required for the Clay Gun and the Spudling Gun.
Getting the most out of your tool set
Having all 11 tools unlocked opens up the full range of what Scrap Mechanic 1.0 offers, from complex vehicle builds to proper base defense. The construction tools are what push your builds from basic to functional, and the weapon tools are what keep you alive long enough to use them. Prioritize materials for the Weld Tool and Connect Tool first, build out your Spud Gun for early combat, then work toward the higher-tier weapons as your resources allow.
For more help across the game, the Scrap Mechanic guides collection covers everything from base building to survival strategies. If you enjoy this kind of sandbox crafting experience, there is a lot more to explore across the action games genre that scratches a similar itch.
