Ship management is hands-on in a way most games avoid. Someone steers, someone manages sails, someone bails water after a cannonball hits the hull. Combat means physically loading cannons and aiming them yourself. The game trusts players to figure out the coordination rather than automating it, which makes a well-run crew feel genuinely satisfying.
Progression uses a cosmetics-only system. Every player has identical combat capabilities regardless of how long they have played, which means a brand-new pirate can take on a veteran in equal terms. Reputation levels with Trading Companies like the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance unlock cosmetics and higher-value voyages, but nothing that creates a mechanical advantage.

Multiplayer and social features
Sea of Thieves is one of the few games where the social layer is the actual content. Encounters with other crews can go anywhere: a quiet alliance to take down a shared enemy, a tense standoff at an outpost, or a full naval battle that ends with one ship at the bottom of the ocean. The game supports up to 24 online players per server, and the PlayStation 5 version takes full advantage of DualSense haptics for cannon fire and wave impact.
Cross-play connects players across Xbox, PC (Windows and Steam), PlayStation 5, and Battle.net, meaning the player pool is large enough that servers stay populated at most hours. The game also includes an accessibility suite with 23 documented features on PS5.
Is Sea of Thieves worth playing solo?
Solo play on a sloop is a legitimate option, not an afterthought. The smaller ship handles well with one person, voyages scale to crew size, and some players prefer the focused experience of managing everything themselves. The risk calculus changes: a solo sailor who spots a galleon has to decide immediately whether to run or fight, and that decision rarely has an obvious answer.
