GTA 6's Lucia and Jason get full names ...

Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian Studios, thinks Grand Theft Auto 6 is about to do something no console game has done in years: become the defining title of an entire platform generation.

Posting on Twitter this week, Douse responded to an analyst's claim that GTA 6 would be one of the biggest day-one sellers in history with a prediction of his own. "It's going to be what Mario Kart for Switch is, but GTA 6 for PS5," he wrote. "I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 50% of the 90+ mil PS5s in a week."

That's 45 million copies in seven days. On a single platform.

The Mario Kart comparison actually holds up

The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reference is a sharp one. That game launched on Nintendo Switch in 2017 and never really stopped selling, eventually crossing 70 million copies to become the best-selling game in Switch history. More than a game, it became a reason to own the hardware. Douse is essentially arguing GTA 6 has that same potential on PS5.

Here's the thing: the math isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. With over 90 million PS5 units in the wild, a 50% attach rate in week one would require roughly half of all PS5 owners to buy the game immediately. GTA 5 sold 11 million copies in its first 24 hours back in 2013, when the install base was far smaller and digital distribution was nowhere near as accessible. The franchise has only grown since.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently said "a lot of people will be calling in sick on November 19," which is about as close to a sales confidence statement as you'll get from a public company executive.

Why the caveats matter too

Douse didn't just throw out the 45 million figure and leave. He followed it immediately with a reality check: "Player behavior is very different to when GTA5 launched. So is buying power."

Both points are worth sitting with. The gaming market in 2026 looks nothing like 2013. PS Plus and Game Pass have trained a significant portion of the player base to wait, not buy. Subscription fatigue is real, but so is subscription convenience. GTA 6 won't be on either service at launch, which cuts both ways: no day-one subscribers, but also no diluted sales numbers.

The economic angle is harder to dismiss. Triple-A games at $70 or possibly $80 represent a steeper ask than ever, and the current economic climate means a lot of players are being selective about what they buy at full price. GTA 6 might be the one release that clears that bar without hesitation for most people, but "most" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

What this means for the industry watching from the sidelines

The reason a comment from Larian's publishing lead carries weight here isn't just his credentials (Baldur's Gate 3 was one of the most commercially successful RPGs in years). It's that he's thinking about GTA 6 the same way hardware manufacturers think about system sellers.

If GTA 6 genuinely moves at that scale, it reshapes the conversation around PS5's legacy entirely. The console will have its anchor title. Every other publisher releasing anything in that November window is already doing the math on whether to move their dates.
