Overview
The Sinking City 2 is a third-person survival horror set in 1920s Arkham, a Roaring Twenties port city buckling under a supernatural flood. Frogwares built the game on the detective DNA from their Sherlock Holmes series, then layered in the resource scarcity and enemy pressure that define the survival horror genre. The result is a Lovecraftian experience where every bullet counts and every optional investigation can mean the difference between surviving the next encounter or retreating empty-handed.
The story puts you on a desperate path through a city overrun by eldritch forces. A ritual gone wrong has trapped the soul of the woman you love in the Dreamlands, and malevolent forces have stolen her body. Tracking her through tide-stained avenues, darkened speakeasies, and the depths beneath Arkham is the spine of the game, and her presence is felt throughout even when she cannot be seen.

Arkham itself is built to be navigated rather than simply crossed. Routes open by foot and by skiff, shortcuts unlock behind collapsed seawalls, and secrets hide in boarded parlors. Locations include a hospital where something is being concealed behind clinical walls, a fish market where the stock fights back, and subterranean spaces where the horror gets considerably worse.
Gameplay and mechanics
The Sinking City 2 commits hard to survival horror fundamentals. Inventory space is limited, ammo is scarce, and the pressure builds the deeper you push into Arkham.

Key mechanics include:
- Resource-lean inventory management
- Unlockable shortcuts for backtracking and resupply
- Optional investigations that yield real mechanical rewards
- Build customization through weapon attachments and upgrades
- Enemy-specific tactics requiring retreat and preparation
Some fights can be pushed through directly. Others will send you back to rearm, rework your loadout, and return with a clearer plan. Optional investigations are never required to progress, but they unlock safer routes, hard supplies, and weapon upgrades that change how the next encounter plays out. Skipping them is a choice, but it has consequences.

What enemies does The Sinking City 2 throw at you?
The threat roster pulls directly from Lovecraft's mythology. The Slither animate the dead, turning Arkham's casualties into active problems. Deep Ones surge from dark water wherever the flood has reached. Shadow-type enemies bend space and punish hesitation. Each enemy type demands a different approach, and the game does not offer the luxury of a single dominant strategy across all of them.
Frogwares has designed the combat to reward preparation over reflexes. Retreating to complete an optional case and returning with an upgraded gun is a genuine tactical option, not a fallback for struggling players.
World and setting
Arkham in The Sinking City 2 is a city in the middle of collapse. The Art Deco architecture is battered and tide-stained, the speakeasies have gone dark, and the supernatural flood has reshaped the geography in ways that make navigation itself feel like a puzzle. Districts carry a lived-in texture that makes the horror feel grounded rather than abstract.

The Dreamlands thread runs through the entire world, connecting the personal stakes of the rescue narrative to the wider Lovecraftian mythology. Ritual residues, journals that predate any rational explanation, and physical evidence of things that should not exist are scattered throughout the city. Reading them carefully is how you understand what Arkham has become, and how you survive it.
Investigation and replayability
Frogwares' detective heritage shapes how The Sinking City 2 handles optional content. Cases are genuinely optional, they never block the critical path, but each one feeds back into the main game in concrete ways. Safer routes open up. Supplies become available. Weapons get meaningfully upgraded through attachments and new ammo recipes. The Holloway Manor side mission, for instance, ends with the Bucking Bronco revolver and two weapon attachments carried directly into the main campaign.
The investigation loop asks players to read ritual residues, decode journals, and work through clues that the game does not hand over easily. For players who want to engage with Arkham as a place rather than just a series of corridors to clear, that depth is there. For players focused on the main path, the survival horror structure holds up without it.
