Introduction

Naughty Dog's first standalone Uncharted adventure puts two of the series' most compelling supporting characters front and center. Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross make for an unlikely but compelling duo, tearing through the Western Ghats in a story that blends cinematic action-adventure combat, environmental puzzle-solving, and genuine character work that the mainline games rarely gave either woman room to breathe.

Overview

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy launched on August 22, 2017 as the first standalone entry in Naughty Dog's long-running action-adventure series, and it earns that distinction without leaning on Nathan Drake's coattails. The game follows Chloe Frazer, a series veteran who spent three games as a wisecracking sidekick, now tasked with recovering the Tusk of Ganesh before a ruthless warlord named Asav can use it to ignite a civil war in India. To do it, she enlists Nadine Ross, the mercenary commander from Uncharted 4, and the friction between them drives the story as much as any gunfight.

The setting deserves particular attention. The Western Ghats region gives Naughty Dog's artists a genuinely distinct visual palette compared to the jungles and ruins of earlier entries. Ancient Hoysala temples, monsoon-soaked forests, and crumbling fortresses fill the screen with the kind of environmental density that makes exploration feel rewarding rather than obligatory. The game runs on the same engine as Uncharted 4, and the visual quality holds up without compromise.

Gameplay and mechanics

The core loop will be immediately familiar to anyone who has played the mainline series: third-person cover shooting, climbing sequences, and environmental puzzle-solving tied together by cinematic set pieces. The Lost Legacy doesn't reinvent any of these systems, but it executes them with precision.

Key gameplay features include:

  • Stealth takedowns and optional non-lethal approaches
  • Rope-swinging traversal inherited from Uncharted 4
  • Vehicle exploration across an open-ish Hoysala region
  • Environmental puzzles tied to Hoysala history
  • Co-op survival multiplayer mode

The open chapter set in the Hoysala region stands out as the game's most ambitious design choice. Players drive a jeep across a large outdoor area, locating three token fragments in any order before progressing. It's not a full open world, but it breaks the series' typically linear structure in a way that feels genuinely expansive for the runtime.

World and setting

The decision to set The Lost Legacy in India gives the game a visual and cultural identity distinct from anything else in the series. Hoysala architecture, with its densely carved stone surfaces and tiered towers, becomes both a backdrop and a puzzle mechanic. Chloe's personal connection to the region, rooted in her father's archaeological work, adds emotional texture to what could have been straightforward treasure hunting.

Nadine's presence as a foil works better here than it did as an antagonist in Uncharted 4. The two characters distrust each other at the start, and watching that relationship shift through shared danger and honest conversation gives the story real weight. The voice performances from Claudia Black and Laura Bailey carry the material convincingly.

Impact and legacy

At roughly six to eight hours, The Lost Legacy sits in an interesting space: longer than most DLC, shorter than a mainline entry. Naughty Dog originally developed it as downloadable content for Uncharted 4 before expanding the scope into a standalone release. That origin shows in how tightly constructed the pacing feels, with very little filler padding the runtime.

The game is available on PlayStation and PC as part of the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which bundles it with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. For players who bounced off the Drake-centric stories or simply want a focused action-adventure puzzle game with two of the series' best supporting characters, The Lost Legacy makes a strong case for itself on its own terms.
