The best weapons in Valheim, ranked by biome and damage type

Valheim has over fifty weapons, and the game tells you almost nothing about which ones are worth the silver and ancient bark. Most tier lists floating around still rank gear from three biomes ago, ignoring the full 1.0 progression ladder that now runs from the Meadows all the way through the Deep North. This guide ranks the best weapons at every stage, explains the single mechanic that matters more than weapon tier, and tells you exactly what to carry into each biome.

S-tier weapons at a glance

S-tier weapons at a glance

What is the single best weapon in Valheim?

The short answer depends on where you are in the game:

  • Best endgame melee:Nidhögg (135 slash, gemstone-upgradeable one-handed sword) or the dual Berserkir Axes (140 slash plus 10 lightning with 25% chain lightning chance)
  • Best all-purpose weapon across the whole game:Frostner (35 blunt + 40 frost + 20 spirit). The frost slow is the best crowd control available, and the spirit damage punishes undead from the Swamp through the Deep North.
  • Best bow:Ash Fang (82 pierce) from the Ashlands. Before that, Draugr Fang (47 pierce plus innate poison on every arrow) is the most reliable option.
  • Best magic:Staff of Embers (120 blunt + 120 fire, AoE fireball) for raw area damage.
tip
Weapon skill level matters more than weapon tier. A level-50 Iron Mace out-damages a freshly crafted Black Metal Sword from a different skill tree. Pick one or two weapon types and commit to them.

Full Valheim weapons tier list

Tiers here reflect how well a weapon performs relative to the endgame, not just its own biome window. An S-tier weapon is something you carry to the final boss. A C-tier weapon can still be excellent for its moment.

tip
The Cheat Sword (10,000 slash damage) exists in the game but requires console commands to obtain. It has no place in a legitimate loadout. If you want to experiment with console tools, check out the Valheim cheat list and all console commands guide.

Best weapons for each biome

Valheim's progression is linear. Every boss unlocks the crafting tier for the next biome. Here's the best weapon to target at each stage and why it wins.

Loading table...

Meadows and Black Forest

Start with a Flint Spear (flint spawns along water edges) and a Crude Bow. The spear doubles as a throwable, which matters when you're not ready to close distance on a Troll. In the Black Forest, the Bronze Atgeir's spinning secondary attack hits every enemy around you simultaneously, making it the first weapon that actually feels powerful. Keep a Bronze Mace on hand: Skeletons resist pierce and are weak to blunt.

Swamp

The Swamp throws Draugr, Skeletons, and Blobs at you constantly. All three take bonus damage from blunt. The Iron Mace is the correct answer, and Bonemass itself is weak to blunt and frost while being immune to poison. Bring an Iron Mace, a poison-resistance mead, and the fight becomes manageable.

Mountain

This is where Frostner earns its reputation. The 35 blunt + 40 frost + 20 spirit combination means it punishes undead with spirit damage, slows everything it touches with frost, and staggers with the physical hit. Pair it with the Draugr Fang bow (available from Mountain materials) for ranged coverage. The Draugr Fang's innate poison applies regardless of which arrows you load.

Plains

Fulings have no hard resistance, so raw damage wins. The Black Metal Sword is the cleanest pick. The Porcupine mace (50 blunt + 45 pierce) is worth crafting if your Clubs skill is already leveled, since the mixed damage type never runs into a hard resistance.

warning
Do not bring a fire or poison weapon to the Swamp's Blobs and Oozers. They resist fire and are immune to poison. A mace is the only correct tool.

Mistlands

The Mistwalker sword (75 slash + 40 frost) emits light that actively clears the mist around you. In a biome designed to blind you at all times, that utility is worth more than the stat line. The Krom two-handed sword hits 150 slash for the highest single-hit melee damage at this tier, while the Himminafl atgeir (85 pierce + 40 lightning) is the best crowd-control polearm in the game. Its secondary attack staggers everything in a ring and calls down lightning.

The Mistlands also introduce the Staves. Staff of Embers (120 blunt + 120 fire) throws explosive fireballs with damage-over-time. Magic requires Eitr-focused food, so it's a commitment, but the Staff of Embers is the most destructive single weapon in the game for clearing groups.

Ashlands

The Ashlands introduces a gemstone upgrade system for its weapons. Three gemstone types modify your weapon's elemental behavior: Bloodstone (increased damage per health lost), Iolite (lightning damage and chain lightning), and Jade (poison plus a chance to immobilize enemies).

The Thundering Berserkir Axes with Iolite gemstones are the highest sustained-DPS melee option in the game. Their fast dual-wield attacks constantly trigger chain lightning, creating a lethal spread across grouped enemies. Nidhögg (135 slash) is the top one-handed sword pick, with three variants covering bleeding, lightning, and raw damage. The Ash Fang bow (82 pierce) replaces the Draugr Fang with higher raw damage and the same gemstone versatility.

Deep North

The Deep North's standout weapon is the Thunderblood Dagger, which combines lightning proc chance with increased damage per health lost. Its 4x backstab multiplier stacks with the health-based damage boost for potentially devastating sneak attacks. The Frostfire Bow combines fire and frost damage over time, making it an effective opener before enemies close the gap.

Which weapon type should you actually main?

This is the decision that shapes your entire run. Every weapon belongs to a skill (Swords, Clubs, Axes, Spears, Polearms, Knives, Bows, Crossbows, Unarmed, plus Elemental and Blood magic). Each skill runs from 0 to 100 and adds damage per level. Spreading attacks across six weapon types keeps all of them weak.

The proven approach: one melee skill leveled to the cap, plus Bows for ranged. Two skills, covered.

  • Clubs/Maces: Safest all-game choice. Covers the two undead-heavy biomes outright, and Frostner keeps the skill relevant through the final boss.
  • Swords: Highest raw single-target damage ceiling. Nidhögg and Dyrnwyn are the endgame payoff.
  • Polearms (Atgeirs): Best answer to being swarmed. The spinning secondary attack hits everything around you with no damage split.
  • Knives: Pure burst. Skoll and Hati deal 6x damage against unalerted enemies, turning sneak attacks into one-shots. The Thunderblood Dagger extends this into the Deep North with its 4x backstab multiplier.
  • Bows: Level this regardless of your melee choice. Trolls, Drakes, Deathsquitos, and most Mistlands enemies are significantly easier to handle at range.

Damage types and enemy weaknesses

Matching damage type to enemy weakness beats bringing a higher-tier weapon. Valheim has three physical types (Slash, Pierce, Blunt) and five elemental ones (Fire, Frost, Poison, Lightning, Spirit).

Loading table...

Keep a blunt weapon and a fire source in your inventory at all times. Those two cover almost every enemy encounter in the game regardless of which biome you're in.

tip
Frostner's frost damage deals bonus damage to any enemy caught in rain or standing in water. This makes it overperform in the Swamp and Ocean encounters compared to its stat line alone.

How does the Call to Arms update change weapon choice?

Combat changed significantly with the Call to Arms overhaul (patch 0.221.4). The update added Adrenaline, a resource built by landing hits, executing Perfect Blocks, and pulling off Perfect Dodge Rolls (dodging at the exact frame an attack lands). When the Adrenaline bar fills, it triggers an effect set by your equipped Trinket, a new gear slot added alongside the system.

What this means practically: shield-and-one-hander builds got stronger because blocking feeds Adrenaline. Knife and fist builds got a stamina engine through Perfect Dodge Rolls. The Fader boss in the Ashlands grants a Forsaken Power of +100% Adrenaline gain, which makes the Ashlands endgame builds feel noticeably faster.

Weapon choice still matters, but how you fight now matters just as much. Parrying, dodging at the right frame, and managing Adrenaline are skills worth practicing from the Meadows onward.

S-tier weapons: detailed breakdown

Nidhögg

The Nidhögg is a one-handed sword from the Ashlands with 135 slash damage and three gemstone variants: Bleeding (Bloodstone), Thundering (Iolite for chain lightning), and Primal (Jade for poison and immobilize). The Bloodstone variant increases damage as your health drops, which pairs well with aggressive, high-risk combat. It has a 2x backstab multiplier and a 5-point movement bonus.

Thundering Berserkir Axes

The dual-wield Thundering Berserkir Axes deal 140 slash plus 10 lightning with a 25% chain lightning trigger chance. Fast dual-wield attacks mean the chain lightning procs constantly, spreading damage across groups in a lethal cascade. The highest sustained-DPS melee option in the current build.

Frostner

Frostner is a Mountain-tier silver mace dealing 35 blunt + 40 frost + 20 spirit. The frost slow is the best crowd control in the game. Spirit damage specifically targets undead enemies, making Frostner relevant from the Swamp all the way through the Deep North. It has a 30-point knockback value, the highest of any S-tier weapon.

Draugr Fang

The Draugr Fang bow deals 47 pierce plus 5 innate poison damage on every arrow, regardless of arrow type. It has a 1.5x backstab multiplier and zero knockback, keeping enemies in place for follow-up shots. The stamina drain is balanced enough to sustain through extended fights, and it remains viable well past the Mountain biome where it's first craftable.

Mistwalker

The Mistwalker sword hits 75 slash + 40 frost and emits light that clears the surrounding mist in the Mistlands biome. The frost and spirit effects slow enemies and weaken undead. Its parry bonus of 48 makes it one of the more defensive swords in the game. Carries you comfortably through the Ashlands.

Frequently asked questions

Is Frostner still worth crafting in 1.0?

Yes. Frostner is a Mountain-tier weapon and it stays relevant deep into the endgame because so many enemies are undead (weak to spirit damage) or vulnerable to frost's slow. The 30-point knockback keeps enemies at a distance. It's the classic craft-once, use-forever weapon.

Sword vs atgeir vs mace: which is best?

They're best at different jobs. Maces win against undead-heavy biomes (Swamp, Mountain). Atgeirs are the best answer to being swarmed thanks to the sweeping secondary attack. Swords have the highest raw single-target damage. Pick based on what's killing you and level that skill to the cap.

Do I need to use magic?

No. Every boss can be beaten with melee and a bow. Magic is strong, particularly the Staff of Embers for AoE, but it requires Eitr-focused food and the Mistlands Black Forge to access. It's an endgame commitment, not a starting choice.

What's the best weapon for Bonemass?

The Iron Mace. Bonemass is weak to blunt and frost and immune to poison. Bring a poison-resistance mead and the fight becomes straightforward. Do not bring a bow as your primary damage source here.

Building your Valheim loadout

The weapon tier list is only part of the picture. Your food choices determine your HP and stamina pool, which changes how aggressively you can fight. Biome-appropriate food can be worth more than a weapon upgrade. Your Forsaken Power choice matters too: Eikthyr's power reduces stamina drain for running and jumping, which directly affects how long you can swing a weapon before exhaustion.

If you're working through the achievement list alongside your weapon progression, the Valheim achievements guide covers all 53 unlock requirements, including the ones tied to weapon skills and boss kills.

For everything else, the full Valheim strategy guide collection has progression walkthroughs, crafting recipes, and biome-specific survival tips to cover the rest of the climb.
