Valheim miniboss guide: all 4 locations, drops, and strategies

Valheim has a set of optional bosses that most players walk right past during their first playthrough. These aren't the Forsaken bosses tied to main progression. They're minibosses, four of them in total, each locked inside a rare dungeon in a specific biome. Three are part of Hildir's questline and reward her chests when defeated. The fourth sits in the Ashlands and drops the piece you need to craft the legendary sword Dyrnwyn. Here's everything you need to know to find them, beat them, and collect every reward.

What are Valheim minibosses?

Minibosses were introduced with the Hildir's Request update and remain fully optional in Valheim 1.0. Defeating them yields Hildir's Chests, which you carry back to the merchant Hildir to expand her cosmetic inventory. Each miniboss lives inside an exclusive dungeon that only spawns up to 3 times per world, so you'll need to explore to track one down.

Lord Reto is the outlier. He doesn't connect to Hildir's questline at all. His sole purpose is dropping the Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment, one of three pieces needed to assemble the Dyrnwyn sword.

Beating all four earns you the Odin is Pleased achievement. For a full list of unlockable achievements and tips on the trickier ones, check out the Valheim 1.0 achievements guide.

How do you start Hildir's questline?

First, find Hildir. She's one of only three NPCs in the game and spawns in the Meadows, but never within 3,000 meters of your starting point. There are ten potential spawn locations, so sailing along island coastlines is the fastest way to track her down. Her position appears on your map as a T-shirt icon once discovered.

Hildir's shop opens with a limited stock. To unlock her full inventory, interact with the map table in front of her. This starts the questline and marks three dungeon locations on your map. Each dungeon holds a miniboss sitting on one of her stolen chests. Defeat the miniboss, then physically carry the chest back to Hildir. Keep in mind each chest weighs 200 units, so plan your return trip accordingly.

tip
Bring a portal kit when hunting miniboss dungeons. You can set one up near the dungeon entrance so the return trip with the heavy chest is shorter.

Brenna (Smouldering Tomb, Black Forest)

Brenna is the first and most approachable miniboss. The Smouldering Tomb looks similar to other Black Forest burial chambers, with narrow corridors guarded by 1-star skeletons and occasional ghosts. Bring a torch.

Brenna is a burning skeleton that fights with a sword and deals fire damage on top of standard melee hits. At 1,200 HP, the fight is manageable if you're comfortable with parrying. A blunt weapon with elemental damage works well here, with Frostner being the standout choice if you have it. Alternatively, brew a fire resistance mead before entering to reduce the fire damage spike.

Geirrhafa (Howling Cavern, Mountains)

The second miniboss is Geirrhafa, a large werewolf lurking in the Howling Cavern deep in the Mountains biome. The cave is filled with 1-star bats and Ulvs, so clear them before engaging the boss.

Geirrhafa hits hard with frost attacks, and his ice storm ability can chunk your health fast. Stay back when you see icy mist building up. His claw swipes can be blocked and parried, which gives melee builds an opening. Geirrhafa is weak to fire, making fire arrows an efficient damage source. With 3,700 HP, this fight runs long, so good food for stamina and healing matters more than raw damage output.

warning
Entering the Mountains without frost protection is a fast way to die before you even reach the Howling Cavern. Frost Resistance Mead or Wolf Armor are non-negotiable.

Zil and Thungr (Sealed Tower, Plains)

The Sealed Tower is easy to spot in the Plains given its height. Getting inside is the first challenge. You'll need to climb to the top by placing a workbench and building stairs or platforms to reach the entrance. Fulings patrol both the exterior and interior, so fight your way through before descending the spiral staircase.

This fight is actually two enemies at once. Thungr is a heavy brute with 4,200 HP who deals blunt damage, and Zil is a Fuling shaman who throws magical attacks from range. Neither has a specific weakness, so your best Plains-tier weapon, the Blackmetal sword being the obvious pick, is the right call. Take down Thungr first to remove the constant pressure, then finish Zil.

Lord Reto (Tomb of Lord Reto, Ashlands)

Lord Reto is the hardest miniboss by a significant margin and has nothing to do with Hildir. Finding his tomb requires some legwork: locate vegvisirs inside Putrid Holes in the Ashlands, follow the markers to a series of mysterious locations, and interact with each vegvisir in sequence until the third one reveals the Tomb of Lord Reto's entrance.

Reto is a two-star greatsword fighter with 7,500 HP. His sword strikes are devastating and can kill you in one or two hits if you're not properly geared. Ranged combat is strongly recommended. A good bow with strong arrows keeps you out of his melee range, and the Staff of the Wild or Frostner are effective alternatives. Reto is vulnerable to Spirit damage, so factor that into your weapon choice.

He drops the Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment once. The blade and tip fragments are found at the other two mysterious locations in the Ashlands, not on Reto himself.

important
Lord Reto only drops the Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment once per world. There's no second chance, so make sure you're picking it up before leaving the dungeon.

How to spawn miniboss dungeons with console commands

If you're struggling to find a dungeon through exploration, console commands can spawn one directly. The process works on PC, Xbox, and Mac.

  1. Open the console and enter devcommands
  2. Type and enter debugmode
  3. Enter location followed by the dungeon spawn code

Here are the spawn codes for each miniboss dungeon:

  • Brenna:Skeleton_Hildir
  • Geirrhafa:Fenring_Cultist_Hildir
  • Zil & Thungr:GoblinBruteBros
  • Lord Reto:Charred_Melee_Dyrnwyn

For a complete breakdown of every console command in the game, the Valheim cheat list and console commands guide has the full setup steps.

Where do minibosses fit in the overall progression?

Minibosses are side content, not a replacement for the main Forsaken boss chain. The Hildir questline can realistically start once you're deep enough into the Black Forest to handle the first dungeon, and it scales up from there through the Mountains and Plains. Lord Reto sits at the Ashlands tier, which places him at the very end of current progression.

Treat them as optional goals that reward cosmetics and one powerful crafting component. If you're following the full progression path and want to know where each main boss fits alongside the miniboss content, the Valheim 1.0 boss locations and rewards guide covers every Forsaken boss in the same detail.

For everything else across the game, the full Valheim strategy guide collection is worth bookmarking as you work through each biome.
