Valheim 1.0 Deep North Guide: All New Monsters & Drops
Advertisement

The Deep North biome in Valheim is not just a frozen wasteland to push through. It is a fully stocked ecosystem with nine new creatures, each tied to specific locations, crafting materials, and survival strategies. Some of these enemies are passive resources waiting to be harvested. Others will hunt you down and end a run you spent hours building. Knowing what you are walking into before you cross the snowline makes a real difference.

What new creatures does the Deep North biome add?

The 1.0 update added nine distinct creatures to Valheim's Deep North region. They split across three main locations: the open overworld, the Winding Tunnels underground dungeon, and the Mörkhalla dungeon. A few also appear during world events, which means encountering them is not always optional.

Here is a full breakdown of every creature, where it appears, and what it drops:

tip
Fire damage is the common weakness across Seals, Elakings, Moose, and Barka. Bringing fire-based weapons into the Deep North gives you a consistent edge against four of the nine new creatures.

Seal

Seals are the first creatures you will likely spot after reaching the Deep North. They cluster along the ocean coast at the biome's edges and are among the least threatening enemies in the update. What they lack in danger they make up for in material value. Seal Pelt is required for crafting apparel and the Moose Saddle, which you need to ride a tamed Moose.

One important note: Baby Seals exist in the wild but drop nothing when killed. Targeting adults only is the efficient move.

Moose

The Moose is the new tamable animal in the 1.0 update and the most versatile creature in the biome. In the wild it is aggressive and will pursue you relentlessly. Its kicks deal serious damage, so do not underestimate it at close range. Defeating one yields Moose Meat, Moose Hide, and Moose Sinew, all of which feed into the Spirit Caller crafting recipe.

Taming a Moose requires Lingonberries. Once tamed and fitted with a Moose Saddle, it becomes a rideable mount for navigating the northern terrain.

Barka

Barka are giant frozen treants that roam the overworld. They look like distant cousins of The Elder boss, built from wood and encased in ice. Movement is slow, but do not close the gap carelessly. Barka can strike from long range using their extended arms, and their attacks apply a frostburn effect that stacks damage over time.

Fire damage cuts through them efficiently, and every Barka drops a Frozen Branch, one of the more essential crafting materials in the biome. They also drop Frostcore and a Barka Trophy.

Gammeltroll

Gammeltrolls are the heaviest overworld threat in the Deep North. They are massive frost trolls with a tough shell that absorbs incoming damage, so arriving underprepared is a fast way to lose progress. Bring your best gear.

The payoff is worth the fight. When a Gammeltroll dies, its body petrifies into stone. You then mine the remains using an Ember Charge to extract Petrified Tissue, which converts into Bloodgold at the Blast Furnace. Bloodgold is a core material for weapon crafting in the 1.0 update.

warning
Do not attempt a Gammeltroll fight without upgraded armor. Their damage resistance means drawn-out fights, and their hits can delete your health bar if you are not protected.

Winding Tunnels creatures

The Winding Tunnels are an underground dungeon in the Deep North. Three creatures call this place home, and the combination of tight corridors and multiple enemy types makes it one of the more punishing locations in the update.

Elaking

Elakings are the most common enemy you will encounter in the Deep North, both in the open overworld and inside the Winding Tunnels. In the open they are manageable, especially during daylight. At night they become significantly more active and tend to move in groups, so early exploration after dark is a bad idea.

Inside the Tunnels, Wardrobe Shafts act as spawners for Elakings, meaning the dungeon can keep replenishing them while you are still inside. Their claw swipes, lunges, and bites are straightforward, but the volume of enemies in a confined space is the real danger.

The most important Elaking drop is the Mould: Intricate Key, which lets you craft an Intricate Key used to unlock specific areas or containers in the biome.

Luminous Larvae

Luminous Larvae are the only fully passive creature in the 1.0 update. They cling to the walls of the Winding Tunnels, glowing softly and making a chirping sound when you approach. They will not fight back when you pick them up.

Pickup matters here. Collecting a Luminous Larva unlocks the Hooded Lantern recipe, making them a priority grab on your first tunnel run.

Eyeless One

The Eyeless One is the most dangerous creature in the Winding Tunnels. It hides underground and ambushes players by bursting out and dealing heavy damage to anything nearby. Despite the name, it tracks you effectively and will give chase through the corridors.

The real threat is the combination. When Eyeless Ones and Elakings are active in the same corridor, the encounter escalates fast. The Eyeless One drops Long Claws, the crafting material required to build fist weapons in Valheim 1.0.

important
Turn off camera shake in settings before entering the Mörkhalla or fighting Hexens. The screen movement from spell impacts makes tracking enemies significantly harder.

Mörkhalla dungeon creatures

Hexen

Hexens are floating mage enemies found inside the Mörkhalla dungeon. Once you have visited a Mörkhalla, they also begin appearing in the overworld. They are agile, blink out of melee range, and cast spells that knock you back on contact.

Melee weapons are the wrong tool here. Crossbows, bows, and throwables are the practical options. Hexen drops Nornathread, a material used to craft capes and armor pieces in the Deep North tier. They also have a chance to drop moulds for the full Caller armor set (Robes, Headdress, and Trousers of the Caller).

Krigen

Krigen are the melee counterpart to Hexens inside the Mörkhalla. They resemble the Draugr from the Swamp biome but hit considerably harder. Their attack pattern includes sword strikes and a headbutt charge when you try to create distance, so backing away is not a reliable strategy.

Krigen also appear during Jotun invasion events, which means you will face them outside of dungeons as well. Defeating them gives a chance to drop moulds for the Vanguard armor set (Chestpiece, Hood, and Trousers of the Vanguard), considered one of the stronger armor sets available in the 1.0 update. Regular drops include Leather Straps and Memorial Coal.

tip
The Vanguard armor mould drops are not guaranteed from every Krigen kill. Farm multiple Mörkhalla runs to collect the full set, and prioritize dungeons over waiting for invasion events.

How do you prepare for the Deep North biome?

The nine creatures above cover a wide range of threat levels. Seals and Luminous Larvae are low-risk resource runs. Gammeltrolls, Eyeless Ones, and Krigen are fights that require preparation. A few practical points before you head north:

  • Fire weapons are effective against Seals, Elakings, Moose, and Barka. Bring them.
  • Ranged options are necessary for Hexens. Do not go into the Mörkhalla without a bow or crossbow.
  • Cold resistance matters as much as combat readiness. The freezing temperature in the Deep North drains health independently of enemy damage.
  • Ember Charges are required to mine Gammeltroll remains. Have them ready before the fight.
  • Taming a Moose requires Lingonberries and patience. The creature deals serious damage while wild, so approach the taming process with full health and good armor.

For a full breakdown of what bosses await you after clearing these creatures, the Valheim 1.0 boss locations and rewards guide covers every summoning requirement and boss drop. If you want to track your progress through the update, the Valheim 1.0 achievements guide lists all 53 achievements and how to unlock them. For players who want to experiment with spawning specific creatures or testing gear, the Valheim console commands guide covers every available cheat for PC, Xbox, and Mac. More tips and guides for the full 1.0 update are collected in the Valheim guides hub.
