All Familiars in Witchspire and their ...

Familiars are one of the most rewarding systems in Witchspire. These spirit companions fight alongside you in battle, and the rarer ones bring passive abilities that can meaningfully shift how encounters play out. The catch is that getting them takes a bit more than just stumbling into the right area. You need to kill creatures, attempt a bond, and hope it sticks. Here's everything you need to know to build your roster fast.

How do you get Familiars in Witchspire?

The game hands you your first Familiar right at the start. You pick from four options: Bril, Fien, Locto, and Quol. None of them is dramatically better than the others at this stage, so pick whichever appeals to you visually. You'll be finding new Familiars throughout your run anyway.

Once you're out in the world, Familiars come from the creatures you encounter while exploring. The process has two steps:

  1. Kill the creature you want to bond with.
  2. Attempt the bond with its spirit after it dies.

If the bond succeeds, the Familiar goes straight to your inventory. If it fails, you don't get it that run. Some creatures appear more frequently in specific areas, so if you're hunting a particular Familiar, it's worth revisiting zones where you've spotted it before.

How do you equip and use Familiars?

You can have up to three Familiars equipped at any time, but only one is active during play. To set them up, head to the nearest Hearth and press Tab. From there, drag Familiars from your inventory into the three dedicated slots.

Switching between your equipped Familiars mid-run uses the C key in the default control layout. Only the active Familiar participates in combat, so think about which one suits the enemies you're expecting before you head deeper into a floor.

What are all the Familiar rarities in Witchspire?

Familiars come in four rarity tiers. The higher the tier, the harder the bond is to complete, but the passive abilities they bring are noticeably stronger.

Beyond the four standard rarities, Familiars can also appear as Celestial or Shifties variants. These alternate color patterns don't change the rarity tier itself, but they're visually distinct and worth collecting if you're building out your roster.

Tips for farming better Familiars

After testing creature encounters across multiple areas, a few patterns stand out for players who want to target specific Familiars:

  • Stock Incense before farming. The bonding attempt is the only point of failure after a kill, and Incense directly improves those odds. Prioritize crafting it whenever you have the materials.
  • Revisit specific zones. Certain creatures are more common in particular areas of the world. If you want a specific Familiar, return to where you first saw that creature type rather than wandering randomly.
  • Check boss drops. Bosses can drop Incense, which means clearing them isn't just about progression. It also fuels your Familiar-hunting efforts.
  • Rotate your active Familiar based on context. With three slots available and C to switch on the fly, there's no reason to run the same Familiar into every fight. Match your active companion to the encounter.

Is it worth chasing Legendary Familiars early?

Honestly, not at the cost of your Incense supply. Early on, Common and Rare Familiars are enough to keep your active slot useful. Save your Incense for Epic and Legendary bonding attempts once you start seeing those creatures regularly. Burning through your supply on Common creatures just to fill your inventory faster isn't efficient.

The Familiar system in Witchspire rewards patient players who explore thoroughly and manage their resources. If you enjoy RPG games with deep companion mechanics, this system has a lot of depth once you start targeting specific rarities and building around their passives.
