The Skyborne are World of Warcraft Forever's new playable race, and their racial toolkit is built around a single theme: air, elemental power, and movement. Three racials are shared by every Skyborne regardless of faction. The fourth depends on whether you roll Alliance or Horde during character creation. That faction split also determines whether you can play Mage or Shaman, so the decision carries more weight than most race choices in WoW history.
How does the Skyborne racial system work?
Skyborne pick their faction at character creation rather than starting neutral. Alliance Skyborne align with the High Order, while Horde Skyborne follow the Windshapers. Every Skyborne gets three shared racials: Walk on Air, Wind Blessed, and Elemental Insight. The fourth slot is faction-locked.
High Order (Alliance) receive Read Ley Line, a regeneration ability tied to Azeroth's arcane ley lines.
Windshaper (Horde) receive Skysight, an elemental blessing that increases movement speed.
The class list splits along the same lines. Both factions can play Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid. Alliance Skyborne unlock Mage. Horde Skyborne unlock Shaman. There are no Skyborne Paladins, Priests, or Warlocks in the current announcement.

WoW Forever Skyborne Guide: Racials, Classes & How to Unlock
Walk on Air
Walk on Air is the signature Skyborne racial and the one that will feel most distinctive in everyday play. Activating it lets you glide downward through the air for up to 10 seconds, with directional control during the descent based on current demo tooltip data. The key word is downward. This is not flying. You need height before it does anything useful.
Current demo information shows Walk on Air operating as an instant ability with a 2-minute cooldown. Those numbers come from demo builds and remain subject to tuning before the live launch.

WoW Forever Skyborne Guide: Racials, Classes & How to Unlock
The practical value depends entirely on zone design. A flat zone gives you almost nothing to work with. A vertical zone filled with cliffs, towers, ravines, and elevated quest objectives turns Walk on Air into a genuine time-saver. Instead of following a road back down from a mountain summit or gambling on a fall that might kill you, Skyborne can simply glide toward the next objective.
For PvP, the racial has situational escape potential around elevated terrain. On flat ground, it contributes very little. The ability rewards players who pay attention to their surroundings rather than players looking for a passive damage edge.
Every Skyborne class benefits equally here. The racial is about terrain and creativity, not stats.
Wind Blessed
Wind Blessed is a permanent passive that increases melee, ranged, and spellcasting Haste by 1%. No activation required. No enemy type restriction. It simply runs in the background on every attack and cast.
That breadth is what makes it the most reliably useful combat racial in the Skyborne kit. A Warrior gets melee Haste. A Hunter gets ranged Haste. A Mage or Shaman gets spellcasting Haste. A Druid switching between Feral, Balance, and Restoration roles benefits across all three playstyles from the same single passive.
1% Haste is a modest number by design. Blizzard's stated approach to Forever racials is flavorful advantages without making one race the mandatory pick for a role. Wind Blessed fits that philosophy: it is always working, never dominant.
Elemental Insight
Elemental Insight increases damage dealt to Elemental creatures by 5%. Against an Elemental, that is a meaningful offensive boost. Against anything else, it does nothing.
Azeroth has plenty of Elemental enemies across questing zones, dungeons, and outdoor farming areas, so this racial is not as niche as it might first appear. Fire elementals, water elementals, earth elementals, and air elementals all qualify. Specific dungeon bosses and raid encounters with Elemental classifications will also trigger the bonus.
For farming, the math is straightforward: if you are grinding an Elemental camp for profession materials or rare drops, Skyborne clears those mobs slightly faster than a comparable character without the racial. Across hundreds of kills, that adds up. Just do not pick Skyborne because of Elemental Insight unless you already know your farming route involves Elementals heavily.
The most common mistake players make with this racial is treating it as a flat 5% damage increase everywhere. Wind Blessed is the general combat passive. Elemental Insight is the situational one.
Read Ley Line vs Skysight: which faction racial is better?
This is the real decision point for Skyborne players, and the answer depends on what you value.
Read Ley Line
Read Ley Line activates a ley line to increase Health and Mana regeneration by 100%. The important clarification: this doubles your regeneration rate. It does not instantly restore 100% of your Health and Mana. Those are very different things.
Demo data currently shows a 2-second cast and 2-minute cooldown. The ability reportedly lasts around 15 seconds normally but can extend to approximately 15 minutes when used near an actual ley line in the world. Those extended durations are demo-era values and should not be treated as confirmed final numbers.
The racial suits Mana-dependent classes best. Mage, which is exclusive to Alliance Skyborne, benefits directly from faster Mana recovery between pulls. Balance and Restoration Druids gain from both the Health and Mana components. Hunter can reduce downtime during extended outdoor sessions. Warriors and Rogues only get the Health regeneration half, which still has value but is less impactful.
During Classic-style leveling with genuine downtime between fights, Read Ley Line can shave real time off your eat-and-drink recovery cycles.
Skysight
Skysight grants an Elemental Blessing that increases run speed by 10%. Demo tooltips show a 0.5-second cast and 2-minute cooldown, with the bonus lasting around 30 seconds normally and up to 15 minutes near an elemental convergence. Again, those extended values come from demo builds.
Movement speed is consistently undervalued by players who have not experienced Classic-style WoW. You spend enormous amounts of time traveling between objectives, crossing camps, repositioning in combat, and moving between gathering nodes. A 10% speed boost does not show up in a damage meter, but it shows up in how the game feels across an entire session.
Skysight pairs naturally with Shaman, the Horde-exclusive Skyborne class, which fits the Windshaper elemental identity. Warrior and Rogue benefit because melee classes need to reach targets. Hunter can maintain distance and traverse outdoor zones more efficiently. Druid already has strong mobility, so Skysight builds on an existing strength.
What classes should play Skyborne?
Skyborne Druids deserve a specific mention because they get unique Druid forms not available to other races. That visual distinction alone will drive a significant portion of Druid players toward Skyborne regardless of racial optimization.
For pure racial efficiency, here is how each class interacts with the kit:
- Warrior: Benefits from Wind Blessed melee Haste, Walk on Air for terrain, and either Read Ley Line (Health regen) or Skysight (gap closing).
- Hunter: Gets ranged Haste from Wind Blessed, Elemental Insight for outdoor farming, and either recovery or movement depending on faction.
- Rogue: Melee Haste from Wind Blessed, Walk on Air for positional escapes, and Skysight's movement bonus suits Rogue's positioning-heavy playstyle particularly well on Horde.
- Druid: Wind Blessed covers every spec. Elemental Insight helps in relevant content. Unique Druid forms are the biggest draw.
- Mage (Alliance only): Wind Blessed covers spellcasting Haste, and Read Ley Line directly addresses Mage's Mana dependency during leveling and farming.
- Shaman (Horde only): Skysight fits the Windshaper elemental identity. Wind Blessed supports all three Shaman specs across melee, ranged, and healing roles.
How to unlock Skyborne
Skyborne require a separate purchase. The Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99) is the minimum entry point. The Skyborne Epic Pack ($59.99) and the Warcraft Forever Collection ($79.99) both include the race as well. A standard active World of Warcraft subscription lets you play WoW Forever, but you cannot play Skyborne without purchasing one of those packs.
Skyborne begin in Zephras Isle, a dedicated starting zone that covers levels 1 through 12. Blizzard describes it as an elemental, skybound area designed to introduce the race before characters enter the broader world.
For more on the zones you will be running through as a Skyborne, the WoW Midnight zone events guide covering all four events and their rewards is worth reading before you hit the ground running. The full World of Warcraft guides collection has everything else you need to plan your character from level 1 through endgame.
