Overview
1666: Amsterdam is a third-person dark action-adventure game developed by Panache Digital Games, the independent studio founded by Patrice Désilets, the creative director behind Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and the original Assassin's Creed. The game puts you in the boots of Noa Brooklyn, a woman born into the Zaindari bloodline for one purpose: hunting down The Originals, ancient entities who have lived for centuries among ordinary people, abusing the power they were granted. The setting is Amsterdam in 1666, a city at the height of the Dutch Golden Age, built on commerce and ambition, and now quietly haunted.
A free Prologue is available now on Steam and Epic Games, letting players step into Noa's Commencement before the full Early Access release. That prologue establishes the tone quickly: this is a game interested in atmosphere and mystery as much as combat.

World and setting: a city with two faces
The Amsterdam in 1666 is handcrafted and split across two distinct modes of play. By day, Noa explores the city's canals, gablestone-marked facades, and crowded streets, gathering information and identifying which citizens are actually The Originals wearing human faces. The investigation layer asks you to observe, mark, and track your targets before the confrontation arrives.

At night, when the Esbat comes, those targets reveal their true forms. That is when Noa collects. The day-to-night cycle is not just cosmetic; it structures the entire gameplay loop around preparation and reckoning.
Gameplay and mechanics: witchcraft, cats, and confrontation
The core mechanics of 1666: Amsterdam break down into a few distinct pillars:
- Investigate targets by day across a handcrafted open city
- Use Zaindari witchcraft and spellcasting to approach each confrontation differently
- Switch between Noa and Aaron, her companion who exists as a cat
- Face The Originals in their true demonic forms during Esbat events
- Choose your methods, since each target supports multiple approaches
The dual-character system is one of the more unusual design choices here. Aaron was summoned from 1999 and now inhabits a cat's body, giving him a radically different movement set and perspective compared to Noa's spellcasting. Switching between them is not just a gimmick; the two playstyles are described as genuinely distinct, with Aaron's feline mobility complementing Noa's witchcraft toolkit.

What makes 1666: Amsterdam different from other action-adventure games?
Most dark fantasy games put the supernatural threat front and center from the opening minutes. 1666: Amsterdam buries it. The Originals look like anyone else on the street. Identifying them, building a case against each one, and then choosing how to confront them during the Esbat creates a rhythm closer to a supernatural detective game than a straight action title.
Panache Digital Games has a history of building games around unconventional ideas. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey dropped players into prehistoric survival with almost no guidance. 1666: Amsterdam appears to carry that same design philosophy into a more structured but still player-directed experience.

Content and replayability
The game enters Early Access on August 25, 2026, on Steam and Epic Games. The Prologue already available gives a concrete taste of the opening chapter, including Noa's Commencement and the choice of which companion walks beside her. Panache has built the Esbat confrontation system around multiple viable approaches per target, which points toward meaningful replay potential even within the same story. For players drawn to dark fantasy action-adventure games with deep narrative setups and flexible combat systems, 1666: Amsterdam builds a strong foundation from its very first chapter.
