Overview

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is a co-op third-person shooter developed by Cold Iron Studios and published by Daybreak Game Company. Up to four Colonial Marines are dropped into the most hostile corners of the Aliens universe, where xenomorphs stalk corridors, ambush from shadows, and swarm in numbers that can flip a controlled firefight into a desperate last stand within seconds. The game builds directly on the foundation of its predecessor, expanding squad size, enemy variety, and class customization to push the co-op formula further.

The tone is unambiguously survival-focused. There are no rescue missions here. Every map is designed to escalate, moving players from tense, careful positioning into full-blown chaos as xenomorph waves intensify. Pyro and electric ammo types let squads manage crowds at range, while stun batons cover the moments when things get uncomfortably close. The combat toolkit is wide enough to support different playstyles without ever letting players feel safe.

Squad mechanics and class design

The jump from three to four players is the most structurally significant change in AFE2. That extra slot opens up more viable squad compositions and puts greater emphasis on deliberate class selection before a mission starts. Key features of the class system include:

  • Distinct playstyles per class
  • Unique tactical abilities for each role
  • The new Specialist class for hybrid builds
  • Mix-and-match major and minor abilities
  • Loadouts tailored to squad gaps

The Specialist is the standout addition. Rather than locking players into a fixed role, it lets them pull major and minor abilities from every other class in the game and combine them into a custom loadout. A squad running two damage-focused classes can fill a support gap through the Specialist, or players can double down on a niche and build something the game's designers didn't explicitly plan for.

How does the xenomorph variety change the fight?

AFE2 introduces a significantly expanded roster of xenomorph types compared to the first game. The variety is not cosmetic. Different enemy types demand different responses, and mixing them in the same encounter forces squads to constantly reassess positioning and ammo prioritization. A group that handles one variant with ease can be caught off-guard the moment a new type enters the room.

Staying mobile is not optional. Xenomorphs use flanking routes, ambush from vents, and apply pressure from multiple angles simultaneously. Situational awareness matters as much as raw firepower, and squads that stand still too long tend to get punished for it.

Horde mode and replayability

AFE2 launches with dedicated Horde maps built specifically for wave-based survival. These are separate from the campaign and structured around escalating difficulty, with rewards that scale as squads push deeper into each run. The format rewards consistent teamwork over individual performance, since a single player going down at the wrong moment can cascade into a full squad wipe.

The Horde maps function as the game's endgame stress test. Weapon customization and gear loadouts carry over, meaning the progression systems from the main game feed directly into how well a squad performs in extended survival scenarios. For groups that want a repeatable challenge beyond the campaign, these maps provide the highest-stakes version of everything AFE2's co-op shooting has to offer.
