Overview

Big Ambitions, developed and published by Hovgaard Games and released on August 28, 2026, is a business sim RPG set across a detailed recreation of New York City. The game starts you with almost nothing: a small apartment courtesy of your uncle, an entry-level job, and the ambition to build something bigger. What separates it from most tycoon games is that your character physically inhabits the world. You don't just click menus to open a coffee shop; you travel to the location, sign the lease, renovate the space, stock the shelves, and hire the staff.

The scale of what's possible here is genuinely hard to summarize. You can run a single boutique clothing store and call that success. You can build a chain of fast-food restaurants across multiple boroughs. You can develop websites, open law firms, operate liquor stores, or manage a florist. The business types span a wide range of industries, and each one has its own operational logic that deepens as it grows.

The life sim layer runs underneath everything. Your character ages, needs sleep, needs food, and needs to stay mentally healthy. Neglect those stats while grinding for profit and performance starts to slip. It's a clever pressure valve that stops the game from becoming a pure spreadsheet exercise.

Gameplay and mechanics

The core loop in Big Ambitions rewards patience and planning. Early on, the key actions are:

  • Taking out loans to fund your first business
  • Renting and renovating commercial properties
  • Hiring and managing front-line staff
  • Importing stock through the harbour and warehouse network
  • Monitoring cash flow and reinvesting profits

As operations grow, the management layer expands. HR Managers, Logistics Managers, and Purchasing Agents all enter the picture, each requiring a proper office setup at a headquarters you build and furnish yourself. The physical world matters throughout: buying a delivery truck means visiting a dealership, not selecting from a dropdown.

Real estate runs parallel to the business side. Any building in the city can potentially be purchased, from a midtown penthouse to a Hell's Kitchen townhouse to a skyscraper. Property becomes both a status symbol and an investment vehicle, generating returns that compound alongside your business income.

What makes Big Ambitions different from other business sims?

Most business sims abstract the player away from the world. You're a cursor clicking on buildings and watching numbers move. Big Ambitions puts you inside the simulation as a character with physical needs and a presence in the city. That design choice changes the texture of every decision. Driving to the harbour to arrange an import shipment feels different from clicking a button labeled "restock."

Hovgaard Games previously made Startup Company, a well-regarded indie business sim. Big Ambitions is a much larger project in scope, adding the open-world New York setting, the life sim mechanics, and the physical character layer on top of what that game established.

Content and replayability

The sandbox structure means no two playthroughs need to look alike. A player focused on retail chains will have a completely different experience from one building a real estate portfolio or grinding toward a single dominant corporation. Wealth can be spent on cars, casino runs, or investment funds, adding lifestyle choices that feed back into the happiness and wellbeing systems.

The combination of business strategy, life sim management, and open-world exploration gives Big Ambitions a depth that most tycoon games don't attempt. The city is the playground, the businesses are the engine, and the character's life is the stakes that keep every financial decision meaningful.
