Overview
Bombanana! is a 3-player asymmetric co-op game developed by Lefto Studio and published by TARK, built around a deceptively simple premise: three monkeys with different sensory limitations must work together to defuse a bomb. The blind monkey can touch the bomb but can't see colors or read anything on screen. The mute monkey holds the bomb disposal manual but can't speak a word. The deaf monkey can see the bomb and watch teammates gesture frantically, but hears nothing. Every player has exactly what the others need, and none of them can solve it alone.
The game launched September 2, 2026, on Windows, macOS, and Steam. What makes it stand out in the crowded co-op party game space is that it doesn't just restrict communication as a gimmick. It builds the entire puzzle design around those restrictions, meaning every module, every timer tick, and every environmental hazard is designed to exploit the gaps between what each player knows.

How does the asymmetric communication actually work?
This is the question every player asks before their first session, and the answer is messier than it sounds. The mute monkey reads instructions but can only communicate through an emote wheel and physical gestures. The blind monkey physically interacts with the bomb's modules but depends entirely on the deaf monkey relaying what they're seeing. The deaf monkey watches everything but can't hear voice chat at all, so teammates have to mime, point, and wave with increasing desperation as the timer counts down.

Key mechanics at a glance:
- Asymmetric sensory roles for all 3 players
- Emote wheel and gesture-based communication tools
- Puzzle modules with unique rules per bomb
- Environmental hazards including power outages and obstructions
- Slapping, which the developers describe as an essential feature
The game doesn't dictate how players communicate. There's no prescribed system. Groups can use voice chat (though the mute monkey can't speak in-game), wild gesturing, or whatever shorthand they develop over time. That freedom is exactly where the arguments start.

Content and replayability
Bombanana! offers three distinct modes to keep sessions from feeling repetitive. The Campaign runs 30 handcrafted levels with difficulty that scales progressively, giving groups a structured path through increasingly complex bomb configurations. Endless mode switches to procedurally generated, wave-based challenges that keep escalating with no ceiling, which is where experienced teams will spend most of their time once the Campaign is done.

The Custom mode is where the game gets interesting for groups who want to tune the experience. Players can adjust bomb difficulty, the countdown timer, which module types appear, what environmental hazards are active, and how many mistakes are allowed before detonation. That level of granularity means the same three friends can play very different sessions depending on how sadistic they're feeling that night.
Multiplayer and social
Bombanana! is locked to exactly 3 players, no more and no less. That specificity is a design choice, not a limitation. The three roles are precisely balanced so that removing or adding a player would collapse the asymmetry entirely. Voice chat is built in, though its usefulness depends on which role you're playing. The game includes colorblind mode adapted for two types of color blindness, which matters given that one role literally can't distinguish colors.
Environments extend beyond the starting minivan to include a plane and other locations, each introducing different visual layouts that change how the deaf monkey relays spatial information to teammates. The level system ties progression directly to successful defusals, so the harder puzzles unlock only as a group improves. That structure keeps the asymmetric puzzle co-op experience genuinely challenging across multiple sessions rather than flattening out after the first few hours.
