Overview
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a first-person shooter developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. Set in the early 1980s, it serves as a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, picking up the franchise's signature blend of covert operations, conspiracy-driven storytelling, and fast-paced gunplay. The game launched with a single-player campaign, traditional multiplayer modes, and the fan-favorite Zombies cooperative experience.
The setting does a lot of heavy lifting here. Rather than a fictional backdrop, Cold War plants its story in a real geopolitical era defined by distrust and proxy conflicts. Missions span East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, and the Soviet KGB headquarters, giving the campaign a globe-trotting weight that feels earned rather than arbitrary. Historical figures appear alongside fictional operatives, blurring the line between what happened and what could have.
Campaign: who is Perseus?
The single-player campaign centers on tracking Perseus, a mysterious operative working to destabilize the global balance of power. Players assemble a team that includes returning Black Ops veterans Woods, Mason, and Hudson, alongside new operatives built to reflect the era's intelligence community tensions.

Key campaign features include:
- Branching mission choices that affect the story
- Optional side missions for additional intelligence
- Multiple endings based on player decisions
- Historical figure appearances throughout
- Customizable operative loadouts
The campaign runs roughly 6 to 8 hours for a straight playthrough, but the branching structure rewards a second run. Treyarch built in enough narrative weight to make the choices feel consequential rather than cosmetic, which is rarer in the Call of Duty series than it should be.

Multiplayer and Zombies
Beyond the campaign, Cold War's multiplayer brings a Cold War-era arsenal into competitive play. The mode supports the Gunsmith weapon customization system, allowing deep loadout building across rifles, SMGs, and launchers. Maps range from tight close-quarters environments to larger tactical spaces that reward positioning.

Zombies returns as a full cooperative experience, supporting up to four players against increasingly difficult undead waves. Cold War's iteration introduced an Outbreak mode alongside the traditional round-based maps, giving the mode more structural variety than previous entries. Outbreak drops squads into large open zones with objectives, offering a different pace from the classic survival format.

The game also integrates with Warzone, Activision's free-to-play battle royale, sharing weapons and operators across both titles. Players who unlock content in Cold War can carry it into Warzone, which extended the game's effective lifespan well beyond its launch window.
What platforms does Black Ops Cold War support?
Black Ops Cold War is available on PC via Steam and Battle.net, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Cross-Gen Bundle covers both PlayStation generations in a single purchase. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions run at higher frame rates and load significantly faster than their last-gen counterparts, with the current-gen versions taking advantage of hardware-level performance improvements.

Content and replayability
The Steam version of Cold War includes the Confrontation Weapons Pack, which adds two weapon blueprints, alongside the Legendary Captain Price Operator Skin. These cosmetic additions feed into the broader Call of Duty operator and blueprint ecosystem shared with Warzone. Between the campaign's multiple endings, Zombies' Outbreak mode, and a multiplayer suite that has received consistent seasonal updates, Cold War offers a substantial amount of content for fans of the first-person shooter genre looking for both narrative depth and competitive longevity.
