Rex gets shot in the opening minutes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, and the game does absolutely nothing to let you help him. No prompt appears. No objective updates. His handler hides him and promises to return with medical supplies, then gets killed by Blix before making good on that promise. Rex is left wounded and concealed from North Korean soldiers, and the mission moves on without resolution.

That ambiguity is clearly intentional, and it has players searching for a way to change the outcome.

Can you save Rex in MW4 DMZ?

No. There is no mechanic, mission, or interaction in the current version of MW4 DMZ that lets you rescue Rex. The scene where he is hidden plays out the same way every time, with no player input available. You cannot deliver medical supplies, carry him to safety, or trigger any hidden objective related to his rescue.

His handler's death at the hands of Blix closes the loop on that side of the story, but Rex himself is never confirmed dead. The game shows the Operator dying on screen. Rex's fate is left deliberately unresolved.

Can you find Rex in Deadtown?

Deadtown in North Korea is the location players most often check, hoping Rex might have survived and wandered there. He has not. Returning to the area during a standard deployment does not reveal him, and no hidden rescue objective unlocks when you revisit the site.

The absence is confirmed across multiple deployments. Rex simply does not exist as a findable entity anywhere on the map right now.

Is Rex actually dead?

This is the question the game refuses to answer, and that refusal is doing a lot of narrative work. The distinction matters: Blix kills Rex's handler in a scene that leaves no ambiguity. Rex is never shown dying. He is wounded, hidden, and then the story moves on.

That gap leaves two plausible explanations the game has not ruled out:

  • Rex survived his injuries on his own
  • Another Operator found him and provided the medical care his handler never could

Neither scenario is confirmed. Both are consistent with what the game shows. Infinity Ward has not addressed Rex's fate directly.

What happens to Rex's handler?

The handler is the Operator who accompanies Rex into Hajin at the start of DMZ. After Rex is shot and hidden, the handler is killed by Blix before he can return with medical supplies. That death is shown explicitly, which is exactly why Rex's survival remains an open question by contrast.

Here is a quick summary of the key story beats from the intro mission:

EventConfirmed?
Rex is shot and injuredYes
Handler hides Rex in HajinYes
Handler killed by BlixYes
Rex dies from his woundsNo
Rex appears in DeadtownNo
Rescue mission availableNo

Will there be a Rex rescue mission?

Additional DMZ story missions are planned as part of the seasonal content model. A mission from Watcher-2 involving the search for Rex and his return to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) would fit naturally into that structure. The setup is already there: a wounded dog, a dead handler, an unfulfilled promise, and a location players know.

Nothing official has been announced. This remains a hypothesis based on how the story is structured, not confirmed content.

The seasonal model does give Infinity Ward room to address this. If the community keeps pushing for more DMZ story content, Rex has a reasonable shot at returning in a future update. Whether that means a full rescue mission or a smaller story beat remains to be seen.

Watcher-2 could hold Rex's mission

For now, there is nothing you can do to change Rex's fate in the current build of DMZ. If a rescue mission goes live, it will show up on the Watcher-2 mission board at the FOB. Until then, the dog stays hidden somewhere in Hajin.
