Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has a long progression grind ahead of you, and Double XP Tokens are the fastest way to cut through it. Whether you want to hit Prestige faster, unlock weapon attachments without playing 40 hours on a single gun, or push through the Battle Pass when Season 1 arrives, knowing exactly how to earn and spend these tokens makes a real difference. Here is everything you need.
Where do Double XP Tokens come from in MW4?
There are six distinct sources, and a few of them are easy to miss.
- Campaign Rewards: Finishing Campaign missions drops XP Tokens alongside other rewards. Work through the story and you will collect several before you even touch Multiplayer.
- Event Rewards: Limited-time challenges hand out tokens as completion prizes. The Boot Camp event is one confirmed example at launch.
- Promotional Rewards: Codes from real-world promotions, including Monster Energy tab codes, convert directly into tokens on your account.
- Carry Forward Content: Any Double XP Tokens sitting unused in a previous Call of Duty title, including Black Ops 7 and Warzone, transfer over automatically as long as you play on the same account.
- Store Bundles: Certain paid bundles include tokens as part of the package.
- Free Store Gifts: The Store periodically offers complimentary bundles that contain XP bonuses. Check it regularly so you do not miss anything.

What are the three types of Double XP Tokens?
Not all tokens do the same thing. MW4 splits them across three separate progression tracks, and using the wrong type at the wrong time is a common mistake.
| Token Type | Icon Color | What It Affects |
|---|---|---|
| Double XP Token | Green | Player XP (Player Level and Career Level) |
| Double Weapon XP Token | Blue | Weapon XP (gun levels and attachment unlocks) |
| Double Battle Pass XP Token | Orange | Battle Pass progression (not active at launch; carries forward to Season 1) |
The Double Battle Pass XP Token is worth noting specifically: these tokens are not usable at launch because the Battle Pass has not started yet. Any you already own from previous titles will carry forward and become active when Season 1 begins.

How to activate Double XP Tokens in MW4
Activating a token takes about five seconds once you know where to look.
- From the main lobby, look at the bottom-right corner of the screen. You will see a small rectangular box containing three icons.
- Click that box to open the dedicated XP Token menu.
- Tokens are sorted by type and duration: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 1 hour.
- Select the token you want to activate. The bonus applies immediately and a countdown timer appears.
- You can also access this menu through the Pause Menu while already inside a match.
Does the Double XP timer count down in the lobby?
This is where MW4 changes things compared to older Call of Duty titles. The token timer only counts down while you are actively inside a Multiplayer or DMZ match. Time spent sitting in the main lobby, browsing loadouts, or hanging around the DMZ Forward Operating Base does not drain the clock.
That means you can activate a token, spend a few minutes setting up your loadout, and not lose any of the bonus window doing it. The practical upside is that a 30-minute token gives you closer to 30 minutes of actual in-match double XP rather than 30 minutes of wall-clock time that evaporates while you tab through menus.
When should you actually use each token type?
Player XP Tokens are best saved for longer sessions where you plan to complete several matches back to back. Popping one for a single game wastes most of the window.
Weapon XP Tokens are most efficient when you have just unlocked a new weapon and need to push through its early levels to reach the attachments that make it viable. The grind from weapon level 1 to the unlock thresholds for key barrel or optic slots is steep, and a 30-minute or 1-hour token during that window cuts the time significantly.
Battle Pass XP Tokens should be held until Season 1 launches. There is no point spending them before the Battle Pass is active.
