Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4 - Beta on Steam

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta is live, and if you're reading this instead of playing it, something has gone wrong. The good news is that the causes are almost always the same three things, and two of them you can fix in under five minutes.

Why can't I get into the Modern Warfare 4 beta servers?

There are three main reasons players can't connect to the MW4 beta right now: servers are at capacity, the game needs a pending update installed, or your beta code was never properly redeemed. That last one catches more people than you'd expect, because signing up through Activision's website alone does not grant access. You need to actually redeem a code through your platform.

If the code is sorted and the game is up to date, you're almost certainly hitting a server capacity wall. Activision runs finite server infrastructure, and on day one of a major beta, demand consistently outpaces available slots. This isn't unique to MW4: big online launches have been causing queues and connection drops for years across the industry. The only real fix is patience. Once you're inside a session, stay in it. Quitting the game or losing your connection sends you back to the end of the queue.

tip
Don't close the game while waiting. Staying in the queue lobby, even if it feels like nothing is happening, keeps your spot active. Restarting the client resets your position.

What should you check before blaming the servers?

Before assuming it's purely a server problem, run through this checklist quickly:

  • Redeem your beta code through your platform store, not just Activision's site. If you need help with this step, the MW4 beta code redemption guide walks through the full process.
  • Install any pending updates. The beta client may have received a patch since you downloaded it. An outdated version can block you from connecting entirely.
  • Check your internet connection. An unstable connection doesn't just cause lag. It can prevent the client from pulling the latest update files, or drop you mid-session and push you back into the queue.
  • Verify PC requirements are met. If you're on PC and haven't confirmed your specs yet, make sure your machine clears the minimum bar before troubleshooting further.
warning
Losing your internet connection mid-match counts the same as quitting. You'll lose your server slot and rejoin the queue from scratch, so a wired connection is worth using on launch day if you have the option.

What are the PC-specific issues that block beta access?

PC players have an extra layer of requirements compared to console. Beyond the standard specs, MW4's RICOCHET Anti-Cheat system requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot to be active on your machine. If either is disabled in your BIOS, the game may refuse to launch or connect. Check the TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot setup guide if you're unsure whether your system meets that requirement.

important
TPM 2.0 is a BIOS-level setting, not something you toggle inside Windows. You'll need to restart your PC and enter your BIOS (usually by pressing Delete, F2, or F10 at startup) to check and enable it.

When will server queues clear up?

Server load on beta day one is always the worst it gets. Activision typically scales capacity within the first few hours as they monitor traffic. There's no public queue timer or position indicator in the MW4 beta client, so you won't get a countdown. The best approach is to keep the game open, watch the Call of Duty social channels for any official server status updates, and try again every 10 to 15 minutes if you're being rejected outright.

For a full breakdown of what's waiting for you once you're in, including every reward you can earn during the test period, check the MW4 beta rewards guide so you know exactly what to prioritize once the servers let you through.
