More Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Details Unveiled During NEXT Event

Perks have defined Call of Duty multiplayer since the original Modern Warfare, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 keeps that tradition going with a full three-slot system in the beta. Eighteen perks spread across three categories, each one shaping how you move, survive, and fight. Some are unlocked from the start. Others require you to level up first. Here's every perk available in the MW4 beta, what it does, and exactly when you get access to it.

How does the MW4 beta perk system work?

The beta uses a three-slot perk structure: Perk 1, Perk 2, and Perk 3. Each slot serves a distinct purpose. Perk 1 slots tend to cover movement and detection. Perk 2 handles economy and information. Perk 3 focuses on stamina, equipment, and survivability. You pick one from each category when building a class, and the combination defines your playstyle more than almost any other loadout choice.

Several perks are available immediately when you start the beta. The rest unlock progressively as you level up, so knowing which ones are gated and at what level helps you plan your grind efficiently.

tip
If you want to run Ghost as soon as possible, you need to hit Level 24 first. Plan your early matches around the perks you already have rather than waiting for it.

All Perk 1 abilities and unlock levels

Perk 1 is where survivability and stealth options live. Two perks come unlocked by default, giving you solid options from your very first match.

Quick Fix is the aggressive player's best friend early on. If you're constantly pushing objectives or hunting kills, the instant health regen keeps you in fights longer without relying on cover. Overkill pairs well with any class that wants a dedicated close-range weapon alongside a longer-range primary. Ghost is the perk most players will be grinding toward, since UAV spam is a constant in early beta lobbies.

Kill Chain sits behind the highest level gate in this slot at Level 48, and for good reason. The ability to chain killstreaks off killstreak kills is a significant power multiplier once you're running higher-tier streaks.

All Perk 2 abilities and unlock levels

Perk 2 covers economy, information, and equipment management. Two perks start unlocked here as well.

Hardline is arguably the strongest default perk in the entire beta. Shaving one point off every killstreak cost means you're hitting streaks consistently faster, which compounds over a full match. Bomb Squad is underrated in objective modes where grenades are flying constantly, and the Knockdown immunity is a meaningful edge in close-range scrambles.

Fast Hands unlocks early at Level 12 and immediately improves the feel of every gunfight. Birdseye and Tracker unlock back-to-back at Levels 31 and 32, and the combination of both on the same class would be overkill since they serve overlapping information roles. Pick one based on whether you prefer map-wide awareness or close-range tracking.

All Perk 3 abilities and unlock levels

Perk 3 leans into stamina, equipment utility, and counter-play against enemy gadgets.

Blood Rush is the default perk that rewards aggressive, mobile playstyles. The kill-based stamina reset means you can chain sprints through multiple engagements without slowing down. Scavenger is the safer default for players who burn through ammo quickly.

Cold-Blooded at Level 30 is worth building toward if enemy Killstreak spam is a problem in your lobbies. It counters a wide range of AI-targeting systems and also blocks High Alert, which means opponents running that Perk 1 won't get warned when you're looking at them.

What's the best perk loadout for the MW4 beta?

The answer depends on your playstyle, but after testing different combinations across objective and team deathmatch modes, a few combinations stand out.

For aggressive, objective-focused players: Quick Fix (P1) + Hardline (P2) + Blood Rush (P3). You're regenerating health on kills, hitting streaks faster, and maintaining sprint speed through engagements. All three are available from the start, making this the strongest early-game loadout.

For players who prefer map control and information: Ghost (P1) + Birdseye (P2) + Combat Grid (P3). This combination requires reaching Level 40, but the payoff is significant. You're invisible to UAVs, your minimap shows enemy directions, and you can spot enemy equipment through walls. The tradeoff is that you're not getting any combat survivability bonuses.

For counter-play against heavy killstreak lobbies: Ghost (P1) + Bomb Squad (P2) + Cold-Blooded (P3). Ghost handles UAV detection, Bomb Squad reduces explosive damage from streaks, and Cold-Blooded blocks AI targeting systems. This setup requires Level 30 to complete.

tip
The beta is the right time to experiment with perk combinations you wouldn't normally try. Unlock requirements carry over experience toward the full game, so testing unusual setups now costs nothing.

How to unlock perks faster in the MW4 beta

Level gating means the fastest path to the perks you want is straightforward: play consistently and prioritize modes that generate XP efficiently. Objective modes like Domination and Hardpoint tend to reward more XP per match than pure kill-focused modes because objective captures and defends add to your total. Check out the full MW4 game modes breakdown to find the modes most suited to your playstyle and XP goals.

If you're still working through the beta access process, the MW4 beta early access guide covers how to get in and what to expect before the October 23 launch. And if you want to make the most of every hour in the beta, the all beta rewards guide shows exactly what carries over to the full game.
