Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 drops omnimovement and replaces it with a tighter, more deliberate movement system that rewards players who actually learn its mechanics. The gunplay is more predictable than it has been in years, the loadout system has a new layer of depth with Apex Attachments, and Kill Block is unlike anything the franchise has shipped before. Here is what you need to know before you step into your first match.

How does movement work in MW4?

The biggest adjustment returning players face is that omnimovement is gone. No more directional slides or jumping sideways through windows. What Infinity Ward built in its place is a system built around chaining smaller actions together rather than pulling off single flashy moves.

Mantle cancels and pipe climbing

The mantle cancel lets you pull back from a climb mid-animation. The practical use here is peeking over a ledge or container to spot enemies without committing to crossing to the other side. You can also hang from the top of a climbable surface and fire your sidearm by aiming down sights before dropping back behind cover. Most players in early matches have no idea this is possible, so the window to catch people off guard is wide open right now.

Pipe climbing works on a similar principle. Copper-colored pipes appear on standard multiplayer maps, Kill Block, and the Zodiac Warzone map. You can hang from a pipe and use it to create angles on players below, though the sightlines are more limited than a full mantle. The key takeaway with both systems: these are not all-or-nothing commitments. Treat them as tools for gathering information and creating unexpected angles, not just ways to get from point A to point B faster.

Supine slide and slide-mantle chaining

Double-tapping the crouch button while sprinting triggers the Supine Slide, where your operator slides progressively lower until they end up on their back with their weapon pointed forward. This breaks the sightline an enemy was tracking, which makes it genuinely useful in close-range gunfights rather than just a flashy animation.

Slide-mantling and mantle-sliding are also now available. Sliding into a climbable surface carries momentum into the climb, completing it faster. Mantling into a slide keeps you moving through cover instead of stopping dead at the top. Think of these not as separate moves but as transitions you can chain together to stay mobile without burning stamina.

Operator fatigue

Stamina now visibly degrades during a full tactical sprint. Your operator slows down and their posture changes as fatigue sets in, which directly affects weapon control. Sprinting the full length of a map and immediately entering a gunfight puts you at a disadvantage. Sprint in shorter bursts, use slides to break up the fatigue timer, and maintain momentum without running yourself into the ground before a fight.

Why hipfiring is better than you think

Weapon bloom is gone in MW4. In previous entries, hipfiring introduced random bullet deviation that could cause shots to miss even when your crosshair was on target. That randomness has been removed entirely. Your shots now go exactly where the weapon is pointing.

This does not make your gun a laser. Recoil, weapon sway, and movement still affect accuracy. But the unpredictability is gone, which makes hipfiring a reliable option in close-range engagements rather than a desperate last resort. Shotguns benefit the most from this change. When someone comes sliding around a corner at you, tracking them with a hipfire shot is often faster than pulling up your sights.

What is the Gunny system and should you use it?

Gunsmith returns with the full attachment customization you expect, but Infinity Ward added Gunny as a starting point for players who do not want to build from scratch. Gunny applies preset builds to your weapon based on a selected playstyle. If the result does not fit, you can roll it again or manually adjust the attachments it suggests.

Gunny is most useful as a foundation. The presets are functional but not always optimal, and you will not have access to the system until you have ranked up a few levels. Once you have it, treat its output as a starting draft rather than a finished build.

What are Apex Attachments and how do you unlock them?

Every primary and secondary weapon in MW4 has one Apex Attachment, which unlocks after reaching the maximum level with that specific gun. These are not standard stat-tweaking attachments. They fundamentally change how the weapon functions.

Here's the short answer on why they matter: Apex Attachments do not occupy any of your five attachment slots. You can run a fully built-out weapon and still equip the Apex Attachment on top of it.

Apex AttachmentWeaponEffect
KG Vulcan(Sniper)Drill Charge that flushes enemies from cover
ISO TraceISO NightshadeSpecialized ammo that tags targets, feeding real-time tracking data to the optic
Oden ConversionOden ARConverts the assault rifle into a semi-auto precision sniper

The tradeoffs are real. Some Apex Attachments increase recoil, others cause the weapon to overheat. But since they sit outside the normal attachment economy, there is no reason not to equip one once it is unlocked. If you find a weapon that clicks for your playstyle, stick with it and grind to max level. The Apex Attachment waiting at the end is worth the investment.

How does Kill Block work?

Kill Block is the most original map concept MW4 ships with, and it is worth understanding before you drop in. The map is set inside the West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility and is built from three modular sections called Slabs: two End Slabs that serve as team spawn areas and one Central Slab that sits between them.

Kill Block's modular slab layout

At launch, over 500 unique configurations are possible. The combination changes every two rounds in Gunfight, and the loadouts rotate with it. Both teams play each End Slab before the configuration shifts, which keeps the balance fair even when certain spawns offer better natural cover.

Some Slabs are entirely new environments. Others pull from iconic Call of Duty locations: Crash from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), Storage Town from Warzone's Verdansk, and Shoot House from Modern Warfare (2019) all appear as Slabs. Even familiar sections play differently here because the adjacent Slabs change the flow of every encounter.

Kill Block supports both 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch, with more core multiplayer modes planned for post-launch seasons. Weather simulation arrays can introduce rain or snow mid-match, affecting visibility and tactical conditions.

How to win in Kill Block

The mistake most players make is trying to memorize the full layout on the opening round. The map will change before that knowledge pays off. A more reliable approach:

  • Learn the Central Slab first. It connects to both End Slabs and is where the majority of firefights happen. Getting a read on its sightlines and cover positions pays off across every configuration.
  • Use environmental markers. Construction signs, numbers, arrows, and grenade marks are placed throughout the Slabs. These help with spatial awareness and callouts when the layout changes.
  • Check the Overtime Flag spawn. If neither team eliminates the other before the round timer expires, an Overtime Flag deploys. Knowing roughly where it tends to appear gives you a head start on positioning.
  • Look for quadrant labels. The outer edges of Kill Block are labeled with a grid of letters and numbers. Use these for callouts instead of trying to describe cover positions from scratch.
  • Adapt your weapon to the slab. Gunfight uses randomized loadouts, but Kill Block also appears as a testing ground for Apex Attachments, which rotate into the randomized sets. Pay attention to what you receive and adjust your playstyle accordingly.

Audio, communication, and squad play

Sound design in MW4 carries real tactical weight. Footstep audio gives away enemy positioning in a way that makes a headset a meaningful advantage rather than a luxury. The ping system on the D-pad provides basic enemy and location callouts without requiring a microphone, which covers the gap if you prefer not to use voice chat.

For objective-based modes, coordinating with even one or two reliable teammates makes a measurable difference. Partying up reduces the variance that comes with random lobbies and makes callouts more actionable.

Frequently asked questions

Does MW4 have a practice mode for movement?

Yes. A dedicated mobility course is available in the multiplayer playlist menu. It includes beginner, intermediate, and expert difficulty tiers, and completing each tier rewards you with in-game items.

When do Apex Attachments unlock?

Apex Attachments unlock after reaching the maximum weapon level for a specific gun. Double XP weekends and weapon XP tokens speed up the process.

Can you use custom loadouts in Kill Block?

No. Kill Block's Gunfight mode uses randomized loadouts. Every player on both teams receives the same randomly assigned weapons and equipment each round.

How many rounds does it take to win a Kill Block match?

The first team to win 6 rounds wins the match. The Slab configuration and loadouts change every two rounds.

Is Zombies in MW4?

No. Infinity Ward dropped Zombies for this entry. For what the game offers instead, the DMZ mode breakdown explains what DMZ brings to the table and why it is a bigger deal than it might seem.
