Getting a ship in Crimson Desert starts at Howling Hill, not the waterfront. You need to expand the Greymane camp and follow the Charting the Unknown faction quests before ocean travel opens up. After that, you can buy a vessel with Camp Funds or build your first Small Greymane Ship through a comrade dispatch.

The purchase price is only part of the preparation. Your crew handles cannons, repairs, fishing, and island development, and their roles cannot be changed at sea. Plan the ship and its crew together so your first voyage does not become a return trip to fix an empty job slot.

Which ship should you aim for?

The Small Hernandian Ship, priced at 40,000 Camp Funds, is a sensible purchase for regular ocean travel. The Humble Rowboat is much cheaper at 2,000 Camp Funds, while the Large Hernandian Ship costs 6,000,000 and offers the strongest ship stats.

Ship purchase costs compared

Purchasable shipCost in Camp FundsBest reason to choose it
Humble Rowboat2,000The lowest-cost introduction to sailing and short journeys
Small Hernandian Ship40,000A practical starting vessel for regular voyages
Medium Hernandian Ship1,200,000An upgrade once you have a substantial supply of Camp Funds
Large Hernandian Ship6,000,000Maximum performance, inventory space, and crew capacity

Larger ships improve health, movement speed, acceleration, handling, inventory capacity, and crew space. The Large Hernandian Ship leads in all of those categories, but the Small Hernandian Ship gets you sailing for a much smaller investment.

The Small Greymane Ship belongs to the construction quest route. Building it requires camp resources and a 12-hour dispatch, so decide between buying and building by checking both your Camp Funds and your resource stores.

How do you unlock ships?

Expand Howling Hill and open the maritime quests

Your first prerequisite is Chapter 3: Homestead, which unlocks the Howling Hill camp. Continue the Greymane faction objectives and expand the camp through Gathered Will, part of Grounds of the Sunrise.

Use this progression checklist:

  • Establish the Howling Hill camp through the main story.
  • Advance the Greymane faction quests and complete the relevant Gathered Will camp expansions.
  • Open the faction section of your quest journal.
  • Find Charting the Unknown, then follow A Wider World and its opening quest, A Call from Beyond the Horizon.

A Wider World is the branch that advances ship access. It leads you toward Vellua, where the harbor and ship services become central to the questline.

If A Wider World has not appeared, revisit the Howling Hill expansion objectives. The Charting the Unknown unlock guide also walks through the expansion's setup and its other systems.

Liberate Vellua for the construction route

Vellua is in the Grace Estate. To free the town, open the Hernand faction quests and find Vellua Fisherman’s Guild. Follow Beyond the Silent Waves to the Rumor-Ridden Fishing Village objective.

Start by investigating Vellua and rescuing its chief. Summon your horse to carry him to the marked safe location, then return to clear the occupying enemies. Getting the chief out first lets you finish the fighting without leaving him in the middle of it.

Check the makeshift wooden towers as you clear Vellua. Enemies stationed on those platforms count toward the liberation, so tear down the towers and finish their occupants rather than searching only at street level.

Once the enemies are cleared, Sir Catfish appears. Defeat the boss, then speak to the chief again to complete Vellua's liberation.

If the Vellua fight is slowing your ship unlock, review the inventory and combat advice in the Crimson Desert tips and tricks guide before another attempt.

How do you build the Small Greymane Ship?

After liberating Vellua, return to Howling Hill and select a comrade. Open the Activity tab, choose All, and find the Vellua Small Shipbuilding dispatch.

Shipbuilding resource requirements

ResourceRequired amount
Stone600
Wood600
Food1,200
Copper10,000

Prepare these resources before sending the comrade. The Small Shipbuilding dispatch takes 12 hours. When it finishes, check your quest log for Knowledge for the Small Greymane Ship and the next quest, Where the Wind Blows.

The Small Greymane Ship construction route uses materials and a dispatch timer. Buying a vessel from Hopkins uses Camp Funds instead, so a well-stocked camp and a well-funded camp favor different approaches.

Which crew roles do you need?

A ship's available crew positions determine what it can do on a voyage. For these duties, filling the roles matters more than selecting a particular named comrade. Open the ship's Crew options in port and build the roster around your destination.

Every crew job explained

Crew roleFunctionAssignment priority
DeckhandFishes for food while the ship is stationary and can join island development dispatchesReserve Deckhands when planning island work
GunnerEnables cannon fire; each additional Gunner increases the number of cannons firedAssign before naval combat
CarpenterRepairs lost ship durability; additional Carpenters speed up recoveryPrioritize for dangerous voyages and battles
LookoutMarks nearby reefs and fish gathering areas on the mapBring for unfamiliar waters and fishing
First MateTakes the helm when you leave the wheel unattended during combatUseful when you need to fight away from the wheel
RiggerFurls and unfurls sails as the ship changes speedHandles sail adjustments during travel

For naval combat, prioritize Gunners and Carpenters: one role makes your cannons usable, while the other repairs damage. More Gunners increase the number of cannons fired, and more Carpenters improve repair speed.

For island development, leave space for Deckhands. Filling every available position with combat jobs can leave you without the crew needed for an island dispatch. A Lookout adds navigation information by marking reefs and fishing areas.

Check the Crew menu before you sail. The First Mate's helm takeover applies during combat when the wheel is unattended, while Deckhand fishing requires the ship to be stationary. Those conditions matter when deciding which jobs support your plans.

How do you launch your first voyage?

The Where the Wind Blows quest continues the Small Greymane Ship route after construction. Return to Vellua and follow its harbor objectives before boarding.

Complete the harbor preparations

  1. Examine the Harbor Notice Board at the quest marker.
  2. Follow the next marker and inspect the supplies nearby.
  3. Speak to the comrades beside the supply cart to unlock the Harpoon.
  4. Find Ship Manager Hopkins and select Manage Ship.
  5. Select your vessel and open Crew to assign comrades.
  6. Head to the pier, board the ship, and interact with its wheel.

Hopkins also sells ships once the maritime questline makes them available. Vellua is your initial service point, and additional ship merchants become accessible elsewhere in Pywel as you progress through Charting the Unknown.

How do you repair or recover a ship?

Carpenters restore durability aboard your ship when it takes damage. Assigning additional Carpenters increases the repair rate, making them especially useful when your plans involve naval encounters.

For damaged, destroyed, or lost vessels, return to Hopkins in Vellua. His services cover repairs and recovery, including ships left out at sea. Later ship merchants provide additional places to maintain your vessels as the expansion progresses.

How can you fund your next ship?

The jump between the 40,000-Camp-Fund Small Hernandian Ship and the 1,200,000-Camp-Fund Medium Hernandian Ship makes repeatable income more useful than saving for one oversized purchase. Packaged weapons produced at camp can be transported to the Volworks Armory in Demeniss and sold for Camp Funds. Keep camp weapon production running between trade trips.

Security dispatches offer another route. Church donations can increase regional dispatch rewards, and comrades with suitable skills can improve the payout further. Leased facilities, including the Timberham sawmill and Vellua restaurant, provide ongoing income when staffed with a comrade who has the required skills.

Patch 2.04.00 reduced Golden Apple Hedgehog spawn rates, weakening that gold-bar farming method. Trade goods, dispatches, and operating facilities give you other ways to work toward the Medium or Large Hernandian Ship. Future balance updates may change which route is most efficient.

Before leaving Vellua

  • Confirm that your chosen ship is ready through Hopkins.
  • Assign Gunners for cannon combat and Carpenters for repairs.
  • Keep Deckhands available for island development.
  • Add a Lookout for reef and fishing markers where crew space allows.
  • Finish Where the Wind Blows harbor preparations if you built the Small Greymane Ship.

Once your ship and crew are ready, choose the voyage that fits their jobs: combat with Gunners, island development with Deckhands, or exploration with a Lookout. Use the Crimson Desert guide collection to plan the next objective before leaving port.
