If you want to explore the vast open world of Crimson Desert from your couch or on the go, the question of handheld compatibility matters. Pearl Abyss has released official performance targets for select handheld devices, but not every device gets the same treatment. Here's what we know so far and what you can realistically expect.
Will Crimson Desert Run on the ROG Ally?
If you own an ASUS ROG Ally, you're in luck. Pearl Abyss has published handheld performance targets specifically for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. That means the developer has tested and optimized for these devices, making handheld play a supported experience.
ROG Xbox Ally (Base Model)
The base ROG Xbox Ally gets two distinct modes from Pearl Abyss:
- Performance Mode: 720p native resolution with FSR 3 Frame Generation, targeting 40 FPS
- Balanced Mode: Upscaled 1080p from a 720p base with FSR 3 Super Resolution and Frame Generation, targeting 60 FPS
ROG Xbox Ally X
The ROG Xbox Ally X has stronger internals, which gives it better performance options:
- Balanced Mode: Upscaled 1080p from 720p, targeting 40 FPS
- Quality Mode: Native 1080p resolution, targeting 30 FPS
Pearl Abyss measured all of these figures with the device plugged in and Turbo Mode enabled. Battery performance will drop below these targets, so keep that in mind for longer sessions.
Is Crimson Desert Steam Deck Compatible?
This is where things get murky. At launch, Crimson Desert does not have an official Steam Deck Verified badge. The game's compatibility status is listed as Unknown, meaning Valve hasn't finished its formal certification process.
What Does "Unknown" Actually Mean?
An "Unknown" status doesn't mean the game is unplayable. It just means Valve hasn't tested and certified it against its compatibility checklist. Plenty of games run fine on the Steam Deck before they get any official badge.
The base ROG Xbox Ally has a similar hardware profile to the Steam Deck in terms of processing architecture. That suggests Crimson Desert will probably function on Valve's handheld. If it does, expect performance around the lower end of what the base ROG Ally achieves: roughly 720p Performance Mode targeting 40 FPS with FSR 3.

Steam Deck status unconfirmed
What Platforms Is Crimson Desert Available On?
Crimson Desert launched on March 19, 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac. It's not available on older generation hardware like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, and there's no Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 version.
How Do You Get the Best Performance on Handheld?
If you're planning to play Crimson Desert on a handheld device, here's how to get the best experience:
- Keep the device plugged in and enable Turbo Mode to match the official performance targets
- Start with Performance Mode (720p, 40 FPS) for the most stable experience on the base ROG Ally
- On the ROG Ally X, Quality Mode at native 1080p and 30 FPS is worth trying if you prefer image clarity over frame rate
- For the Steam Deck, start at the lowest settings and work upward once you see how the game behaves on your unit
- Use FSR 3 Frame Generation where available. It provides a meaningful frame rate boost without a dramatic hit to image quality
