Violet arrived in Deadlock on October 16, 2026 as part of the City Never Sleeps update, and she plays unlike anything else in the roster. Her gun fires steerable bullets that shave seconds off every cooldown, her ink walls reshape fights on demand, and every enemy she sketches permanently grows her stats. The short answer to playing her well: land empowered shots on heroes, collect every sketch, and use Abstract Landscape when it actually matters.

What are Violet's base stats?

Violet starts with 710 health (plus 34 per boon), 2 health regen, and 6.9 m/s move speed with a notably long 16.1 m/s dash. Her weapon, Creative Solutions, fires 30-damage bullets at 1.54 per second with 15 ammo, a 2.7-second reload, and 495 m/s bullet velocity, which works out to roughly 46 DPS at base. One important quirk: she carries a -20% crit bonus scale, so headshots are worth less than on most heroes. Right-click is permanently reserved for Living Ink's Draw mode, meaning she cannot zoom in.

Almost everything except raw gun damage scales with Spirit Power. Treat her as a Spirit carry who uses her weapon primarily to deliver Living Ink's empowered shots.

Violet abilities explained

Living Ink

Living Ink is the engine behind everything Violet does. It has 2 charges (7-second gap between charges, 22-second cooldown) and operates in two distinct modes.

Empower mode makes your next 3 bullets steerable for 10 seconds. Each empowered shot deals 120% bullet damage and splashes 35 Spirit damage (x0.7 Spirit scaling) in a 2.5-meter radius. Every hit on an enemy hero refunds 1.5 seconds from all ability cooldowns and half that from item cooldowns. With three clean hero hits, that is 4.5 seconds back on Flow State, Still Life, and even Abstract Landscape.

A few interactions worth knowing before you buy items: empowered shots cannot crit, Violet fires 20% slower while empowered, and Living Ink does not interact with Express Shot, Split Shot, or Ricochet bounces. Item cooldown refunds also do not apply to Siphon Bullets.

Draw mode (right-click) paints a solid ink stroke up to 25 meters long that blocks both projectiles and characters for 20 seconds. Enemies can break it with a heavy melee attack, but doing so deals Spirit damage to them. You and allies can destroy your own strokes for free. Drawing uses a charge but does not start the charge delay, so you can drop a wall even while Empower is waiting to recharge.

Living Ink upgrades:

  • T1: -4-second cooldown, +15-meter max draw distance
  • T2: On Empower, gain +10% fire rate for 10 seconds, stacking up to 5 times
  • T5: +1 second cooldown reduction per hit, improved scaling

Flow State

Flow State (23-second cooldown) sends a brush travelling forward that leaves an ink trail behind it. The trail grants allies +100% bonus slide distance and applies a fading 60% slow for 2 seconds to enemies it passes through. Damage scales from 50 Spirit damage (x0.9) at launch up to 100 (x1.8) after 2 seconds of travel. Reactivating the ability flicks the brush forward, ending the trail early but hitting a larger area with Spirit damage.

Violet can accelerate on her own ink up to 12.7 m/s on flat ground (9.7 m/s uphill), and move-speed slows do not affect that acceleration. The brush moves in the direction you face after launch, so you can steer it. One edge case: the extra slide distance prevents Vyper from sliding up slopes with Slither, so avoid laying the trail under a Vyper teammate mid-climb.

Flow State upgrades:

  • T1: On slide, +150% stamina regeneration
  • T2: -6-second cooldown, +8-meter flick range, +4-second trail duration
  • T5: On slide, damage amplification over time up to 20% for 6 seconds (allies benefit too)

Still Life

Still Life (25-meter cast range, 35-second cooldown) selects one enemy hero as your subject and deals 30 Spirit damage per second (x0.7) while you keep them in your view cone. If you complete the 2.6-second sketch, the target takes an additional 60 Spirit damage (x1.4), suffers a 1-second stun, and drops a sketch on the ground.

The channel ends if the target leaves your line of sight for roughly 0.4 seconds. Distance alone does not break it, and you can still activate items while channeling. Stunned targets freeze in place, including mid-air.

Picked-up sketches permanently grant one of four bonuses depending on the hero type you drew:

Bonus per sketchHero types that provide it
+4% Weapon DamageDeadman Danny, Grey Talon, Holliday, Infernus, Ivy, Mina, Paradox, Venator, Vindicta, Wraith
+3 Spirit PowerBaba, Celeste, The Doorman, Dynamo, Graves, Lady Geist, McGinnis, Paige, Rem, Seven, Sinclair, Solomon, Violet, Viscous
+20 Max HealthAbrams, Bebop, Billy, Kelvin, Mo & Krill, Rat King, Shiv, Silver, Victor, Warden
+0.19 Move SpeedApollo, Calico, Drifter, Haze, Lash, Mirage, Pocket, Vyper, Yamato

You can sketch the same hero repeatedly. Sketches vanish after 20 seconds, so pick them up before you reset to the next fight.

Still Life upgrades:

  • T1: On cast, gain 15 health regen for 4 seconds, refreshed on pickup
  • T2: While drawing, subject deals -35% damage
  • T5: +20% move speed, -11-second cooldown, +0.35-second stun duration

Abstract Landscape

Abstract Landscape (165-second cooldown, 0.6-second cast) raises a circle of ink walls that block vision for 6 seconds (plus 0.04 seconds per Spirit Power). Allies inside receive +25 Spirit Power. Enemies inside are revealed, and any enemy touching an outer wall takes 100 Spirit damage (x1.4), is slowed by 30%, and is silenced for 2 seconds, destroying the ink they touched. The circle grows counter-clockwise from behind you, so it takes a moment to fully close.

The walls count as veils, triggering Veil Walker for anyone who passes through. If you buy Refresher, cancel the first Landscape before casting the second.

Abstract Landscape upgrades:

  • T1: -20-second cooldown
  • T2: On buff, +25% Spirit Lifesteal and +15 Spirit Power (not +50% Spirit Power as some early launch content incorrectly stated)
  • T5: +1.25-second silence duration, +4-second ability duration, ink is no longer destroyed when enemies exit

What is the best Violet build?

The strongest Violet build centers on Spirit Power, Living Ink charge uptime, and cooldown reduction, with survivability items purchased based on what the enemy team is actually doing to you.

Early game items

Start with Extra Charge (800 souls) as your first purchase. It gives Living Ink a third charge and adds +7 Spirit Power to charged abilities. From there, build toward lane sustain and your Spirit damage foundation.

  • Extra Charge (800): Third Living Ink charge, core opener
  • Extra Spirit (800): Ability damage foundation
  • Mystic Regeneration (800): Heals whenever Spirit damage lands on heroes, strong in poke trades
  • Grit (800): Early survivability
  • Extra Regen (800): Compensates for low base health
  • High-Velocity Rounds (800): Helps land ordinary shots when empowered bullets are on cooldown

If trades are forcing you off the wave, prioritize Mystic Regeneration and Grit before adding more damage. Mystic Regeneration loses practical value if you cannot safely touch enemy heroes, so stop forcing hits just to activate its healing.

Mid game items

Your main mid-game goal is completing Rapid Recharge (3,200 souls), which upgrades from Extra Charge and gives +2 charges, 30% faster charge recovery, and 14% cooldown reduction for charged abilities. This is the single most important purchase in Violet's build.

  • Rapid Recharge (3,200): Core charge upgrade, build this first
  • Improved Spirit (1,600): Damage foundation upgrade
  • Spirit Lifesteal (1,600): Sustain during extended fights
  • Tankbuster (3,200): Conditional bonus damage (requires ability hits dealing over 165 damage)
  • Reactive Barrier (1,600): Barrier triggered by stuns, roots, sleep, or silence
  • Healing Booster (1,600): Additional survivability
  • Opening Rounds (1,600): Weapon damage boost between ability casts

Late game items

  • Boundless Spirit (6,400): Major Spirit Power increase
  • Superior Cooldown (3,200): 20% ability cooldown reduction, stacks with Living Ink's per-hit refunds
  • Stamina Mastery (3,200): Movement and durability
  • Greater Expansion (3,200): Increases area coverage of Flow State and Abstract Landscape
  • Spirit Burn (6,400): Rewards the 500+ Spirit damage bursts that Still Life and Abstract Landscape generate
  • Spiritual Overflow (6,400): Gains fire rate, Spirit Power, and Spirit Lifesteal from shooting heroes
  • Escalating Exposure (6,400): Stacks Spirit amp each time you deal Spirit damage, and Violet deals it with all four abilities
  • Transcendent Cooldown (6,400): 25% ability and 25% item cooldown reduction

Skip crit-based gun items entirely. Violet's -20% crit bonus scale and the fact that empowered shots cannot crit make them a poor investment.

What is the best ability upgrade order for Violet?

Prioritize Living Ink throughout, with early points in Still Life and Flow State to access her full toolkit. Abstract Landscape should be unlocked early enough to contribute to team fights before you invest heavily in upgrades.

  1. Unlock Living Ink
  2. Living Ink T1 (shorter cooldown, more draw distance)
  3. Unlock Flow State
  4. Unlock Still Life
  5. Living Ink T2 (fire rate stacking on Empower)
  6. Still Life T1 (health regen on cast)
  7. Unlock Abstract Landscape
  8. Abstract Landscape T1 (-20-second cooldown)
  9. Living Ink T5 (+1 second cooldown reduction per hit, improved scaling)
  10. Still Life T2 (subject deals -35% damage while you draw)
  11. Abstract Landscape T2 (+25% Spirit Lifesteal, +15 Spirit Power)
  12. Flow State T1 and T2
  13. Abstract Landscape T5 (permanent walls, extended duration)
  14. Still Life T5 and Flow State T5

Living Ink T5 is the biggest power spike in this list. The cooldown refund jumps from 1.5 seconds per hit to 2.5 seconds, meaning three clean hero hits now return 7.5 seconds of ability cooldown and 3.75 seconds of item cooldown before counting normal elapsed time. That milestone, combined with Rapid Recharge, is when Violet's pressure becomes genuinely relentless.

How to play Violet in lane

Violet's laning phase is about short, efficient trades rather than sustained pressure. Fire all 3 empowered bullets around troopers and cover to hit the enemy hero, collect the cooldown refund, and back off before they can respond properly.

Two habits matter most early:

  • Keep one Living Ink charge reserved for Draw mode when playing against gank-heavy lanes. A wall dropped behind you while retreating is often the difference between a clean escape and a death.
  • Only start Still Life when the opponent cannot step behind cover within half a second. A cancelled 35-second cooldown is a significant setback in lane.

The mistake most players make with Violet early is burning both Living Ink charges on Empower without keeping one available for defensive wall placement. You lose the escape tool exactly when you need it.

How to play Violet in team fights

Violet's team fight sequencing matters more than individual ability damage. The general flow:

  1. Position near cover with a clear retreat path and aim Flow State through the enemy formation to slow them and give your team the slide highway.
  2. Cast Abstract Landscape on whoever gets caught, so allies inside gain +25 Spirit Power and anyone trying to exit eats a silence and slow.
  3. Start Still Life on a target trapped inside the Landscape. They cannot walk out of your view cone without touching a wall.
  4. Fire Living Ink empowered shots between casts to pull your next Flow State and Abstract Landscape cooldowns closer.

Abstract Landscape should be saved for fights where multiple enemies can be caught or where an objective contest is happening. Using it on a single low-health target wastes a 165-second cooldown.

How to counter Violet

Violet's counters come directly from her own mechanical limitations.

Breaking line of sight cancels Still Life after roughly 0.4 seconds out of her view cone. Heroes with fast repositioning or cover-hugging habits make her biggest stun unreliable.

Unstoppable suppresses her crowd control across all four abilities. Indomitable prevents the Still Life stun and Abstract Landscape silence outright. Debuff Reducer shortens all of them, and the Flow State slow and Still Life stun can be dispelled with appropriate items.

Reactive Barrier triggers on the Still Life stun and the Abstract Landscape silence, so the burst she lines up after either disable hits a barrier instead of a full health bar.

Healing reduction cuts the Spirit Lifesteal she gains from Abstract Landscape's T2 upgrade.

Her ink walls can be broken with a heavy melee attack, but it deals Spirit damage to the attacker. Tanky melee heroes handle this best. Against her ultimate, walk around the Landscape walls rather than through them.

Bad matchups for Violet

Mo & Krill threaten her with Combo's targeted hold and stun. Keep an ally between you and their approach, and reposition before they close the distance. Reactive Barrier absorbs follow-up damage but does not cancel the hold itself.

Mobile flankers force Violet to choose between tracking her Still Life subject and watching another angle. Stay close enough to teammates that a dive meets resistance, and delay Torment Pulse if using it requires stepping into the flanker's preferred range.

Is Violet beginner friendly?

Her kit reads simply enough: empower shots, steer them, complete sketches, use the ultimate on grouped enemies. The complexity rating listed at launch was low. That said, the steering mechanic on Living Ink takes genuine practice to land consistently against moving targets, and knowing when to use Draw mode versus Empower mode is a decision you will make dozens of times per match. Still Life requires good target selection and positioning to complete safely.

Violet suits players who enjoy precision and tactical positioning. If you prefer straightforward weapon damage without ability management, her kit will feel awkward until the steering becomes natural.

As of the October 2026 patch, Violet sits at a 50.2% win rate with a 73.0% pick rate across 6,634 tracked Phantom+ matches, putting her in the A tier. The meta around her optimal build is still developing given her recent release, so expect adjustments as more high-level match data accumulates.

For more hero-specific builds across the roster, the full Deadlock strategy guides collection covers everything from carry builds to support setups. If you want to compare Violet's Spirit-carry playstyle against other heroes, the Ivy guide covers a support-oriented approach, while the Haze guide goes deep on a more traditional gun-carry build backed by over 95,000 matches of data.

Frequently asked questions

How many charges does Living Ink have? Living Ink starts with 2 charges. Extra Charge adds a third, and Rapid Recharge (the upgrade) gives +2 charges total with 30% faster recovery.

Can Violet sketch the same hero more than once? Yes. You can sketch the same hero repeatedly. Each completed sketch drops a pickup that grants its permanent bonus, but sketches vanish after 20 seconds, so collect them before resetting.

Does Abstract Landscape T2 give +50% Spirit Power? No. Abstract Landscape T2 grants +25% Spirit Lifesteal and +15 Spirit Power. Some early launch content misread the tooltip as +50% Spirit Power.

What happens if an enemy breaks Violet's ink wall? Breaking a wall with a heavy melee attack deals Spirit damage to the attacker. Tanky melee heroes absorb this cost more efficiently than squishier opponents.

Who are Violet's best synergy partners? Based on current match data, Ivy, Baba, and Infernus pair well with Violet. Ivy's support capabilities complement Violet's positioning requirements, and Infernus provides the +4% Weapon Damage sketch bonus.
