introduction

Few co-op shooters nail the loop quite like Deep Rock Galactic. Ghost Ship Games built something genuinely special here: a four-player cooperative experience where procedurally generated caves, distinct class roles, and relentless alien swarms combine into missions that never play out the same way twice. Rock and Stone, miners.

Overview

Deep Rock Galactic is a co-op first-person shooter developed by Ghost Ship Games and published by Coffee Stain Publishing, released on 13 May 2020. Set on the hostile alien planet Hoxxes IV, the game drops teams of up to four dwarven space miners into fully destructible, procedurally generated cave systems. The objective is always some variation of the same brutal premise: go deep, extract valuable resources, fight off everything that moves, and make it back to the drop pod alive.

What makes that premise work so consistently is the class design. Each of the four available classes, the Driller, Engineer, Gunner, and Scout, brings a specific toolkit that actively shapes how a mission plays out. The Driller tunnels through rock to create shortcuts. The Engineer deploys platforms and turrets to hold ground. The Gunner provides suppressive fire and zip lines. The Scout illuminates dark passages and reaches high ceilings. None of them function as well alone as they do together, which is exactly the point.

Gameplay and mechanics: how does Deep Rock Galactic actually play?

Every mission starts with a drop pod descent and ends with a scramble back to extraction, but what happens in between varies enormously. The procedural generation ensures no two cave systems share the same layout, and the game's biomes, ranging from the crystalline Crystalline Caverns to the bioluminescent Fungus Bogs, each carry distinct environmental hazards and enemy compositions. Key mechanics include:

  • Destructible terrain throughout every mission
  • Class-specific traversal tools that change movement options
  • Resource extraction objectives tied to mission type
  • Escalating enemy swarms triggered by player activity
  • A drop pod extraction timer that creates genuine pressure

The alien enemies, collectively called the Glyphids, are varied enough to keep combat from feeling repetitive. Swarmers rush in overwhelming numbers. Praetorians tank damage and demand focused fire. Bulk Detonators announce themselves with a terrifying screech and demand immediate attention. Ghost Ship has continued updating the roster through seasonal content.

Multiplayer and social: is Deep Rock Galactic better with friends?

The short answer is yes, though the game supports solo play with an AI companion called Bosco that handles basic support tasks. The multiplayer experience is where the game fully comes alive. Cross-platform play means finding a full lobby rarely takes long, and the cooperative structure rewards communication without requiring voice chat to function effectively. Players who understand their class roles can coordinate through pings and emotes alone.

Season 06, titled Relics of Hoxxes, is currently live across Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation, continuing Ghost Ship's pattern of free seasonal updates that add new cosmetics, missions, and gameplay twists without fragmenting the player base behind paywalls.

Content and replayability

Deep Rock Galactic has accumulated a substantial amount of content since launch. Multiple mission types, including Mining Expeditions, Egg Hunts, Elimination missions, and the punishing Deep Dives that chain three missions together with shared resources, give players distinct goals to chase. Each class has its own progression track, with weapon overclocks and upgrades that meaningfully alter how specific guns handle rather than just inflating numbers.

The seasonal structure adds a battle pass-style reward track, though all functional gameplay content remains accessible without spending money. Cosmetics are the primary monetization lever, which keeps the experience from feeling gated. With four classes to master, procedural caves ensuring variety on every run, and a steady stream of seasonal content, the replayability here is genuine rather than artificial.
