EA Sports FC 27 introduces The Grounds as its biggest structural change to Clubs in years. Rather than a menu you queue from and forget, it is a shared social world where up to 100 players occupy the same space, play street football, compete in Kickabouts, develop their Pro through Archetypes, and access traditional 11v11 competition. Whether the execution fully delivers is a separate conversation, but understanding how its systems connect is what separates players who progress efficiently from those who spend their first week confused about why their Amp expired.
What is The Grounds in EA FC 27?
The Grounds replaces the old Clubs menu structure with a physical shared world divided into three districts plus a central hub called The Terrace. Clubs has not been removed. It now lives inside The Grounds, accessible through your Clubhouse in The Terrace. Leagues, Playoffs, Rush, and 11v11 Drop-In all remain. The Grounds layers street football, Kickabouts, seasonal events, and Pro progression around that existing competitive structure.
This is not VOLTA with a new name. VOLTA was a separate game mode. The Grounds is specifically designed as the home of Clubs, with traditional stadium competition at its center and everything else built around it.

The three districts and what they offer
Each district draws from a different football culture and hosts specific activities.
You start every session in The Terrace. From there you can walk to any district, set waypoints using the map, or fast travel directly to a Street Football pitch or Kickabout location through the menu. The entire world is open from the start. Nothing needs unlocking to access a specific area.
Player markers on the map show you where others are gathering. White dots are general players, blue dots are Club members, and pink dots are party members. Following blue and pink dots is the fastest way to find your squad.

How does Clubs work inside The Grounds?
Your Clubhouse in The Terrace is the gateway to traditional competition. From there you can access League and Playoff matches, 11v11 Live Event Tournaments, and the store for Consumables and Amps. Ranked Rush and 11v11 Drop-In are accessed separately through their own points in the world rather than through the Clubhouse.
The major new competitive addition is Club Tournaments. These are 11v11 events that can vary their round count, entry requirements, and rules. EA has listed several House Rules formats including Mystery Ball, King of the Hill, Headers and Volleys, Survival, No Rules, and Long Range. That gives Clubs a second competitive rhythm running alongside the standard League and Playoff calendar.
Club Objectives add another layer. These are shared goals that Club members contribute toward even when the full squad is not online at the same time. EA splits them into Club Milestones (long-term reputation builders), Club Weeklies and Seasonals (shorter goals rewarding Amps, Consumables, and Coins), and Elite Objectives for Clubs that reach the Elite Division. An Objective might ask the Club to win five League matches, or track combined activity across The Grounds, such as collectively winning 50 1v1 street matches.
What are Kickabouts and small-sided matches?
Street Football covers 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 matches played directly in the districts. These last three minutes each, which makes them genuinely useful for testing a build without committing to a full stadium match. The rules shift slightly from standard football. Shooting assistance is set to Manual while passing stays Fully Assisted. Fouls still exist, and free kicks are taken as direct shots with passing and dribbling temporarily disabled for the taker.

If your first 1v1 ends with shots going everywhere, that is the Manual shooting setting, not a broken build.
Kickabouts are the stranger side of The Grounds. These are short multiplayer activities that mix football mechanics with entirely different objectives.
Kickabouts reward Archetype XP and Grounds Coins, so playing them is not wasted time. They feed directly into Pro progression.
To join any activity, find the pitch using the map, check the information board for its rules, enter the queue zone, and select Play. Some game types can start a separate match once enough players join, so you will not always wait for the current pitch to free up.
How do Archetypes and AXP work?
All 13 Archetypes are unlocked from the start. There is no grind to access a basic build. Resets are also free, meaning you can rebuild without spending Grounds Coins or a reset consumable.
The 13 Archetypes currently available are:
- Shot Stopper
- Sweeper Keeper
- Progressor
- Boss
- Marauder
- Disruptor
- Recycler
- Maestro
- Creator
- Spark
- Magician
- Finisher
- Target

Each one has associated Mastery attributes. The Finisher, for example, highlights Composure and Finishing. The Creator highlights Free Kick Accuracy and Vision. Choosing by role rather than reputation is the better approach, particularly early on.
AXP (Archetype XP) develops your active Archetype. You earn it across both street and stadium play. Limited-time experiences like Club Tournaments and Playoffs offer greater AXP rewards than regular matches. Objectives can also provide AXP Consumables, some of which apply directly while others multiply your earned AXP for a set number of matches.
What are Masteries and why do they matter?
Masteries reward long-term development across multiple Archetypes. Reach specific milestones with one Archetype and your Pro earns permanent Attribute improvements that apply to every build. Reaching Level 10 with the Finisher Archetype, for example, grants +1 Finishing and +1 Composure across all Archetypes.
This changes how you should think about progression. Leveling a secondary Archetype is not wasted time. Those Mastery bonuses carry forward permanently, making your main build better in the long run.
How do Amps work in The Grounds?
Amps are temporary upgrades for your active Archetype. You can equip up to three at once: two Standard Amps and one Signature Amp. Each lasts for a limited number of matches.
Signature Amps can be themed around real footballers, letting your Pro borrow selected characteristics from that player's style for a limited run of games.
One important launch detail: EA's September launch update confirmed that Amps will not provide PlayStyle+ at launch for balance reasons. Earlier feature breakdowns described Tier 4 Signature Amps as capable of granting PlayStyle+, but that is not the case right now.
Amps apply in stadium matches and in-world Rush. They can be earned through Objectives, Live Events, Campaigns, and seasonal progression, with additional options through the store.
The practical advice here is to avoid using your rarest Amp immediately. Learn what your build is actually missing first. An Amp that boosts Long Shots does nothing useful if your real problem is getting knocked off the ball before you can shoot.
Who are the Mentors in The Grounds?
Four Mentors guide you toward different parts of the mode.
Alex Hunter returns here after his original story mode appearances in FIFA 17 and FIFA 18, voiced again by Adetomiwa Edun. His delivery in The Grounds is noticeably more rigid than it was during The Journey, which is a shame given how natural the original performance felt. Kylian Mbappé's lines land with similar stiffness. The voice acting is a weak point, though it does not affect the underlying systems.

What seasonal events are planned for The Grounds?
EA intends The Grounds to change throughout the year rather than staying static. Two confirmed Season 1 events give a sense of the direction.
European Nights brings UEFA Champions League atmosphere into the world. The environment shifts to dusk, players work through small-sided Live Events in the districts, and progression can lead into an 11v11 Stadium Club Tournament. Rewards include footballer-themed Amps inspired by players like Zidane, Maldini, and Bale, alongside emotes and Club kits.
Screaming Grounds follows later with a Halloween makeover, pumpkin targets, themed Live Events, and seasonal cosmetics.
The practical lesson from both events: before grinding regular matches, check whether a live event is rewarding the same activity more generously. Club Tournaments and Playoffs already offer higher AXP than standard play. Seasonal events can stack additional rewards on top of that.
Which platforms support The Grounds?
The Grounds is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 only. PS4 and Xbox One versions of EA FC 27 do not include The Grounds or its Clubs integration.
Cross-play works across PC and current-generation platforms, with the exception of Nintendo Switch 2. Use EA Connect to invite friends to your party or join their session if you end up in different world instances.
Beginner tips for your first hour in The Grounds
The single most useful thing to understand is that FC 27 has removed most of the reasons to be afraid of making the wrong early choice. Archetypes are all unlocked, resets are free, and AXP flows from every activity. That freedom is worth using.
A sensible first-hour sequence:
- Check your available Archetypes and pick one that matches the role you want to play
- Look at current Objectives before starting any activity
- Play a few 3-minute Small-sided matches to test how your Pro moves
- Adjust attributes based on what felt weak, then try a Kickabout
- Move into Rush or Stadium Drop-In once the basic movement feels comfortable
- Save AXP Consumables and Amps until you know which Archetype you actually want to develop
The Objectives check is the step most players skip. EA uses Objectives as a progression path for Grounds Coins, AXP Consumables, cosmetic items, and seasonal rewards. Playing ten matches without checking whether an Objective is tracking the same activity means leaving rewards on the table for no reason.

The Grounds has real problems. The framerate drops during traversal, the NPC animations are stiff, and the open-world wrapper does not add much that a well-designed menu could not handle more efficiently. But the underlying progression, the Mastery system especially, gives Clubs players a genuine long-term structure that did not exist before. That part is worth engaging with properly.
