The Backline Conductor Evolution is live in EA Sports FC 27, and it's one of the cleaner free upgrades available this early in the cycle. It's locked to pure center-backs, hands out a flat +5 across 13 attributes, and adds the Block PlayStyle at Level 2. The catch is the tight stat ceiling: max 79 overall, max 80 pace, and no more than 7 PlayStyles on the base card.
Before you slot a card in, make sure it clears every restriction. Miss one and the player won't be eligible.
The evolution costs nothing in coins or FC Points. Completion difficulty is rated Easy, and the community consensus backs that up.
Three levels, three matches. Each level unlocks after you play one game with your active EVO player in any of these modes:
No wins required. No clean sheets. Just play the match with the card active in your squad. You can knock out all three levels across three consecutive Squad Battles on Semi-Pro if you want the path of least resistance.
The EVO delivers a total of +50 stat points spread across 13 attributes, all in +5 increments. Here's how it breaks down by level:
| Level | Upgrades |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | +5 OVR (80), +5 Heading Acc. (81), +5 Short Passing (75), +5 Sliding Tackle (81), +5 Strength (78) |
| Level 2 | +5 Long Passing (75), +5 Def. Awareness (80), +5 Jumping (75), +5 Aggression (79), Block PlayStyle (3) |
| Level 3 | +5 Vision (76), +5 Interceptions (79), +5 Standing Tackle (78), +5 Stamina (75) |
The stat profile here is built for a physical, defensively aware CB who can also play out from the back. Passing attributes (Short Pass, Long Pass, Vision) all get bumped, which means the upgrade suits a Ball Playing Defender role more than a pure stopper.
The mistake most players make here is chasing the highest base stats instead of thinking about what the card looks like after two or three more EVOs. Pick a profile that will still be worth something six weeks from now.
Best for: Ball Playing Defender builds with aerial presence.
Martínez Quarta arrives with Precision Header, Long Ball Pass, Block, and Aerial Fortress already on the card. That's a rare PlayStyle spread for a 76-rated base. After the full evolution, his defending reaches 79 and his passing sits at 72, which is genuinely usable for a CB trying to trigger counters. His Ball Playing Defender+ and Stopper+ role coverage gives him flexibility across multiple tactical setups.
| Attribute | Base | Evolved |
|---|---|---|
| OVR | 76 | 80 |
| Pace | 74 | 74 |
| Defending | 75 | 79 |
| Physicality | 83 | 83 |
| Passing | 70 | 72 |
Best for: Physical dominance and counter-press resistance.
Agbadou hits the pace cap exactly at 80, which means he qualifies and still brings genuine recovery speed. His base physical rating of 81 climbs to 83 post-evolution, and his existing Jockey, Bruiser, and Block PlayStyles make him one of the strongest 1v1 defenders available at this price point. Defending goes from 76 to 79 across the three levels.
Best for: Wide defensive setups and flexible role coverage.
Bisseck is the most popular pick in the community right now, and the reasoning is straightforward. He comes in at 78 rated with 78 pace, a solid base defending of 77, and a Wide Back+ role that most other CB evolution candidates don't have. Post-evolution, defending reaches 79 and physical hits 82. The Block PlayStyle gets added at Level 2, filling the one gap in his base card. Trust me on this one: if you run a back three or want a CB who can push into wide areas, Bisseck is the pick.
Best for: Pure defending and shutting down pace-heavy attackers.
Matsima starts with 80 pace and 79 defending, meaning the evolution pushes his defending to 80 and physical to 80 while adding Block to his existing Intercept and Aerial Fortress PlayStyles. The passing stats are low coming in (52 base), so this isn't your build-out option. He's a dedicated stopper with elite athleticism.
Best for: Physical CBs who win every aerial and ground duel.
Bassey enters at 78 rated with 85 base physicality, the highest in this group. The evolution doesn't touch his pace (77), but it bumps defending to 79 and passing to 67. His Bruiser PlayStyle pairs with the newly added Block, making him a nightmare to play against in tight spaces. He covers both Defender+ and Ball Playing Defender+ roles.
Here's the short answer: physical upside wins early in the cycle, PlayStyles win later.
Right now, none of these evolved cards will anchor a top-tier squad. EA's slower power curve means you're building toward future upgrade chains, not immediate first XI status. That's why Isaak Touré (6'9", Silver card) is worth mentioning as a raw physical option. His height alone makes him a standout aerial threat even before any stat upgrades, and unusual physical profiles like that are harder to replicate with coins than PlayStyles are.
For players who want PlayStyles pre-loaded, Jordan Torunarigha has the strongest combination of the five Silver options. Joane Gadou is another solid Silver pick if you want league/nation flexibility for a themed squad.
Don't stress too much about chemistry at this stage. By the time these cards are evolved enough to compete in your starting XI, chemistry will be far easier to manage.

Can fullbacks be used in the Backline Conductor Evolution? No. The evolution explicitly excludes LB and RB positions. Any card that can play as a fullback in an alternate position is also locked out.
How many matches does it take to fully complete the Backline Conductor Evolution? Three matches total, one per level. Each match must be played with the active EVO card in your squad at Semi-Pro difficulty or above in Squad Battles, or in Rush, Rivals, Champions, or Live Events.
Is the Backline Conductor Evolution free? Yes. It costs 0 coins and 0 FC Points.
What PlayStyle does the Backline Conductor Evolution add? The Block PlayStyle (rated 3) is added at Level 2.
Can you use the same evolution slot twice? The evolution slot can be reused, so you can run two different CBs through the Backline Conductor path and build a full evolved center-back partnership.
