Elden Ring Guide: How to Complete Alexander the Iron Fist Quest

Alexander the Iron Fist is one of ELDEN RING's most beloved NPCs, a sentient warrior-jar with a dream of becoming the greatest fighter in the Lands Between. His questline spans six encounters across the entire game, from the cliffs of Limgrave all the way to the crumbling ruins of Farum Azula. Miss a step and you miss one of the best talisman rewards in the game.

Where do you first find Alexander the Iron Fist?

The quest starts in Limgrave, east of the Warmaster's Shack site of grace. You'll hear someone shouting before you see him. Scale the rocky cliffs to the right of the road (Torrent makes this much faster) and you'll spot Alexander buried up to his waist in the dirt at the top of the cliff.

He asks you to smack him free. Use a heavy attack from behind to generate enough force. One solid hit does the job. He rewards you with a piece of Exalted Flesh and the Triumphant Delight emote, then mentions he's heading east for a combat festival at Redmane Castle in Caelid.

tip
A charged two-handed heavy attack works reliably here. If your weapon feels too light, two-hand it before swinging.

Second encounter: Gael Tunnel

Alexander turns up next inside Gael Tunnel on the western border of Caelid. The tunnel has two entrances, and this is where players get confused.

If you enter from the rear entrance, you'll find Alexander standing at a locked door he can't open from his side. To free him, you have to find the front entrance, which sits southeast of the rear tunnel opening. Approach from the west border of Caelid Wilds to reach it.

Once inside via the front entrance, clear the enemies on the wooden platforms, descend into the lower pit, and follow the path to what looks like a dead end. There's a door in the back wall. Open it and Alexander is right on the other side. Speak to him twice to send him on his way toward Redmane Castle.

important
You must speak to Alexander twice in Gael Tunnel for him to move on. One conversation is not enough to advance the quest.

Third encounter: Redmane Castle and the Radahn Festival

Find Alexander just north of the Redmane Castle Plaza site of grace in southeastern Caelid. He's here for the festival and fired up about the battle ahead.

When the fight against Starscourge Radahn begins on the Wailing Dunes, Alexander appears as a summon sign on the battlefield. You can call him in, and his death during the fight has no effect on the questline. After Radahn falls, head back to the site of grace and you'll find Alexander nearby, reflecting on the fight and vowing to grow stronger.

Fourth encounter: Eastern Liurnia

This is the step most players miss. After Redmane Castle, Alexander gets himself stuck again in eastern Liurnia of the Lakes, south of the Carian Study Hall site of grace. Start from the Artist's Shack site of grace and head southeast. You'll hear him calling out.

Hitting him from behind this time won't work on its own. He needs something slippery. You need an Oil Pot, which you can craft using a cookbook purchased from the merchant in Siofra River. Toss the Oil Pot at Alexander first, then land a heavy attack from behind. He pops free and heads off to temper himself in the strongest fires he can find.

warning
If you don't have the Oil Pot recipe yet, head to Siofra River and buy the relevant cookbook from the merchant there before returning to this location.

Fifth encounter: Mt. Gelmir lava field

Alexander's idea of self-improvement involves standing in lava. Head to Mt. Gelmir, northwest of the Altus Plateau. Travel west from Wyndham Ruins along the base of the mountain to reach the Seethewater River, then follow it northwest until you reach Fort Laied. The lava field is just south of there.

A Magma Wyrm guards the area. After defeating it, you'll find Alexander standing in the lava to the left of a large rock. You can speak to him from the edge of the lava without taking damage. He hands over the Jar helmet, designed in his own image, then continues his journey.

Final encounter: How to beat Alexander in Crumbling Farum Azula

The last meeting happens in Crumbling Farum Azula, the game's penultimate area. Reach the Dragon Temple Lift site of grace (two Stonesword Keys required for access). From there, head through the plaza, up the stairs, and look right for a fallen structure you can leap onto. Cross over the ruins to the other side and Alexander will be waiting.

He challenges you to a duel. This is a real fight, not a scripted event.

Alexander's key attacks to watch for:

  • A charged uppercut that launches him off the ground
  • Ground slam combos with his fists
  • Rotational spinning attacks when you stay at mid-range

Stay aggressive during his wind-up animations and punish after his heavy attacks. He has a large health pool but his recovery windows are generous. If you lose, you can retry as many times as needed.

Victory earns you the Shard of Alexander talisman, which boosts the attack power of skills, and Alexander's Innards, a quest item. The Innards can be taken to Jar Bairn at Jarburg in Liurnia of the Lakes to continue that separate questline.

tip
The Shard of Alexander is one of the strongest damage-boosting talismans in the game for any build that relies heavily on weapon skills. It pairs especially well with high-damage Ashes of War.

What happens after Alexander's quest ends?

Alexander's story concludes at Crumbling Farum Azula, but his legacy continues through Jar Bairn's questline. Delivering Alexander's Innards to Jar Bairn at Jarburg gives the young jar NPC a piece of his hero, closing the loop on Alexander's journey in a way that rewards players who see both quests through.

For more NPC questlines and boss strategies across the Lands Between, the ELDEN RING Guides collection covers every major questline in the game. Alexander's quest is one of the more forgiving ones in a genre known for punishing players who skip dialogue, but the Oil Pot step in Liurnia catches even experienced soulslike games veterans off guard. Plan ahead, keep crafting materials stocked, and the whole questline flows naturally as you progress through the main story.
