White Mask Varré is the first NPC you encounter in ELDEN RING, standing right at the First Step Site of Grace the moment you walk out of the tutorial. He greets you with barely concealed contempt, calls you maidenless, and sends you toward Stormveil Castle. What he doesn't tell you is that his questline unlocks one of the game's most powerful farming spots, the War Surgeon armor set, and early access to Mohgwyn Palace. Following it through to the end is worth every step.
Where to find White Mask Varré
Varré's first location is impossible to miss. He stands directly in front of the First Step Site of Grace in Limgrave, just outside the tutorial cave. Speak to him here to receive his initial dialogue about the Guidance of Grace and the path to Stormveil Castle.
After you defeat Godrick the Grafted and visit the Roundtable Hold to speak with the Two Fingers, return to his original spot. Varré will be gone, replaced by a message on the ground pointing you to the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes. Interacting with that message rewards you with the Bravo gesture.

How to progress Varré's quest at the Rose Church
Head to the Rose Church in western Liurnia and exhaust all of Varré's dialogue. When prompted, tell him that the Two Fingers seemed strange. He'll hand you 5 Festering Bloody Fingers and ask you to invade other players three times.
The game must be set to Online for invasions to work. If you're playing offline, there's an alternative path.
What if you're playing offline?
After patch 1.06, an offline solution was added. Travel to the Writheblood Ruins in Altus Plateau and defeat the NPC invader Magnus the Beast Claw. Killing Magnus counts as completing this quest step, letting you continue without ever touching multiplayer.
How to get the Lord of Blood's Favor
Once you've completed 3 invasions (or killed Magnus), return to Varré at the Rose Church. He'll induct you into his order and hand you the Lord of Blood's Favor, a white cloth that needs to be soaked in the blood of a Finger Maiden. There are two reliable locations to do this.
The Church of Inhibition is generally the faster option since it doesn't require a rematch with the Grafted Scion. Either way, once you've soaked the cloth, head back to Varré.

Elden Ring Guide: How to Complete White Mask Varré Quest
What does Varré give you as a reward?
Return to Varré with the soaked cloth and he'll give you two things. First, the Bloody Finger, a reusable invasion item that doesn't deplete on use unlike the Festering Bloody Fingers. Second, after a follow-up conversation, he hands over the Pureblood Knight's Medal.
The Medal is the real prize here. Using it from your Consumables inventory teleports you directly to Mohgwyn Palace, a late-game underground area that most players don't reach until much later through the Mountaintops of the Giants. This is also the area where you can fight Mohg, Lord of Blood and access the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC content.
How to complete Varré's quest: the final invasion
Once you're in Mohgwyn Palace, make your way to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace. Near this grace, you'll find a red invasion sign on the ground. Interact with it to enter Varré's world for the final confrontation.
Defeat White Masked Varre in his world to complete the quest. He drops Varré's Bouquet, a unique weapon, along with 6 Festering Bloody Fingers, a Furlcalling Finger Remedy, and a Rune Arc. You'll also find his injured form on the ground nearby; exhaust his dialogue to properly close out the questline.
How to get the War Surgeon armor set
The War Surgeon set, including the highly sought White Mask helm, doesn't drop from Varré himself. It comes from a separate set of NPC invaders called the Nameless White Masks who spawn in the Mohgwyn Palace blood lake area.
From the Palace Approach Ledge-Road Site of Grace, descend into the lake and head northwest toward the Giant Crow enemy. Three invasion signs are scattered in this area, but only the one near the crow drops the full armor set. Use a bow to bait the bird off the cliff before engaging the invader so you're not fighting both at once.
Defeating the correct Nameless White Mask yields the White Mask, War Surgeon Gown (Altered), War Surgeon Gloves, and War Surgeon Trousers.
Why is the White Mask worth getting?
The White Mask helm has a unique passive effect: your attack power increases slightly whenever blood loss occurs nearby. For any build running bleed weapons or Arcane scaling, this is a consistent free damage boost that stacks with other buffs. It's one of the best helms for bleed-focused play in the game.
What makes the armor set missable?
Two things lock the War Surgeon set out of your current playthrough. Defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood stops the Nameless White Mask invaders from spawning. Completing Varré's invasion quest also blocks them. If you've done either before grabbing the armor, you'll need to start New Game Plus to get another shot at it.
Varré's questline is one of the more rewarding NPC chains in the game because every stage gives you something useful, from the reusable Bloody Finger to early Mohgwyn Palace access.
