Fallen Tear: The Ascension

Introduction

Craving a Metroidvania with the heart of a classic JRPG? Fallen Tear: The Ascension from CMD Studios blends freeform exploration, souls-like combat, and a fully voiced cast of 22 companions into a hand-drawn adventure that runs 30 to 40 hours. Hira's search for his forgotten past is the hook, but the bonds formed along the way are what keep players going.

Overview

Fallen Tear: The Ascension is CMD Studios' ambitious attempt to marry two beloved genres: the interconnected map design of Metroidvanias and the character-driven storytelling of classic JRPGs. Players take control of Hira, a young boy born with the dark element, navigating the magical world of Raoah after its pantheon of gods fractures under corruption. The result is a 2D action RPG built around exploration, relationship-building, and combat that punishes carelessness.

Raoah spans 26 interactable biomes, each with distinct visual identities ranging from Silent Spring to Lilac Mire to the crumbling Godspire Ruins. The world reacts to Hira's choices, and the environments shift in ways that feed back into both traversal and narrative. With over 150 enemy types spread across those biomes, the game rarely repeats itself.

The entire game is rendered in traditional hand-drawn animation. Every sprite, background layer, and combat effect has been crafted by hand, giving Fallen Tear a visual consistency that sets it apart from most indie releases at this scale. The soundtrack follows the same philosophy, composed to complement each biome rather than loop generically in the background.

Combat and progression

Fallen Tear's combat system draws from souls-like design without fully committing to its punishing death loop. Hira can slash, parry, and dodge, but the deeper layer comes from the skill trees: Elemental Imbuements let players attach elemental properties to attacks, while Ascension skills open up higher-tier combat options as the story progresses. Key features of the progression system include:

  • Elemental Imbuements for attack customization
  • Ascension skill tree for advanced abilities
  • On-the-fly weapon and item swapping
  • Monster hunts as optional challenge content
  • Enemy pattern learning tied to boss encounters

Boss fights demand genuine preparation. Swapping tactics mid-battle is not just possible but expected, and the game telegraphs enemy weaknesses clearly enough that a thoughtful player can exploit them without excessive trial and error.

What does the Fated Bonds system actually do?

The Fated Bonds system is the JRPG soul inside the Metroidvania shell. Hira recruits 22 fully voiced companions across the world, each belonging to a different archetype: mages, swordsmen, healers, tricksters. Each companion brings unique abilities that affect both combat and traversal, meaning the roster a player builds shapes how they move through Raoah's biomes, not just how they fight.

Every companion also carries their own questline and backstory. These aren't cosmetic sidequests; they feed into the broader narrative and unlock abilities that change how Hira performs in combat. With 22 distinct companions, each with independent skill sets and story arcs, the replayability case for Fallen Tear is real.

The Temple of Oras and base building

Outside of combat and exploration, Fallen Tear includes a castle-building layer centered on the Temple of Oras. Companions recruited across Raoah can be brought back to the Temple, and minigames tied to the base earn upgrades that reflect Hira's journey. It functions as a visual record of progress, a hub that grows alongside the player rather than sitting static between missions.

The Temple system adds a dimension that pure Metroidvanias rarely attempt. Connecting base-building to the companion roster means there is always a reason to pursue those final Fated Bonds, even deep into a 40-hour run. For players who want every corner of Raoah mapped and every ally recruited, CMD Studios has built a game that rewards that completionist instinct without making it feel mandatory.
