Overview
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is a 2.5D action-RPG developed by ArtPlay and published by 505 Games, set in a gothic vision of 16th-century England. A demonic castle controlled by Demon Lord Elias looms over the land, and every attempt by the Kingdom and the Church to destroy it has ended in failure. The game follows two new protagonists, Leonard Brandon, a young fighter from the Church's Black Wolves clan, and Alexander Kyteler, a knight of the Kingdom's White Stags and the lone survivor of a previous failed expedition, as they join forces to take down Elias's reign of terror.
This is an early chapter in the broader Bloodstained universe, meaning newcomers can step in without any prior knowledge of the series. Long-time fans, though, will find connections to the larger lore woven throughout. ArtPlay is positioning The Scarlet Engagement as both an entry point and a reward for series veterans.

The Buddy System: how does co-controlling two characters work?
The Scarlet Engagement's most distinctive mechanical feature is its Buddy System, which lets players control Leo and Alex simultaneously rather than switching between them. The two characters work in tandem to defeat enemies, bypass traps, and push through the castle's defenses. Key features of this system include:

- Simultaneous dual-character control
- Cooperative enemy encounters
- Trap-breaking mechanics requiring both heroes
- Combined abilities pushing toward objectives
- Distinct roles tied to each character's background
This dual-protagonist approach is a meaningful departure from the solo play of Ritual of the Night and Curse of the Moon. Whether the execution holds up across a full campaign is something players will discover at launch, but the concept alone sets The Scarlet Engagement apart from its predecessors.

Epiphany combat and world exploration
The game introduces the Epiphany Combat System, designed around discovering new moves organically during battles rather than unlocking them through a traditional skill tree. Players uncover powerful abilities mid-fight, which is a design philosophy that rewards aggressive, experimental play over careful menu management.
The world itself is Bloodstained's largest map to date, and it operates on a full day-night cycle that shifts lighting and gameplay conditions across dawn, day, dusk, and night. That's not just an aesthetic choice, the time of day actively changes how players interact with the environment. Enemies, traps, and traversal opportunities all respond to the shifting light, which gives exploration a rhythm that changes with each hour in-game.
Craft, cook, and customize
Beyond combat, The Scarlet Engagement builds out a crafting and cooking system tied to character progression and side quests. Armor changes are visually reflected on the characters, and the customization options extend to appearance beyond just stat-boosting gear. Cooking side quests add another layer to the loop, giving players reasons to engage with the world outside of the main story path.

The combination of dual-character action, a discovery-based combat system, and a dynamic open world makes The Scarlet Engagement one of the more ambitious entries ArtPlay has attempted in the gothic action-RPG space. Platforms include PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, Xbox, and PlayStation, with a planned 2027 release window.
