Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake ...

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake drops you into the fog-drenched streets of Minakami Village with nothing but a Camera Obscura and your nerve. Every spirit you photograph earns you Spirit Points, the core currency that unlocks outfits, photo mode items, and vital story consumables. Whether you are chasing the achievement for completing the full Spirit List or simply trying to keep Mio Amakura alive through the later chapters, understanding how Spirit Points work and where every spirit hides is essential knowledge.

What Are Spirit Points and How Do They Work?

Spirit Points are awarded each time you successfully photograph a spirit using the Camera Obscura. This applies to both hostile enemy spirits and the passive wandering spirits scattered throughout Minakami Village. According to the Fatal Frame Wiki, Spirit Points function as the primary in-game currency and serve different purposes depending on the game in the series.

In Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly and its remake, the camera upgrade system uses Spirit Orbs rather than Spirit Points directly. However, Spirit Points you accumulate still contribute to your score and can be spent on unlockable rewards including outfits to customize Mio, healing items for story use, and special photo mode content.

In Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, the system expands further, allowing players to purchase most items at the start of each chapter using Spirit Points, though spending them deducts from your chapter ranking score. The remake follows a similar reward philosophy, making every photo opportunity worth taking.

How Are Spirit Points Earned Most Efficiently?

The fastest way to build your Spirit Points total is to focus on Fatal Shots and Zero Shots (timed shots taken just as a spirit lunges at you). These high-risk captures award significantly more points than standard photographs. Beyond combat, photographing Specters before they disappear and capturing both Twin Dolls in a single frame also rewards bonus points.

What Are the Four Types of Spirits?

The Spirit List in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is divided into four distinct categories. Completing all of them unlocks a dedicated achievement.

Wraiths: Full Location List

Wraiths show up as red indicators on your Camera Obscura and will charge you on sight. These are the spirits you will fight most often throughout the story. Photographing them during combat is the primary way to earn Spirit Points in large quantities.

Twin Dolls: How to Photograph Them

Twin Dolls appear as paired figures in white dresses and glow with a blue outline similar to Specters. The key mechanic here is that you must capture both dolls in the same photograph to register them in your Spirit List. If only one appears in frame, the entry will not count.

Revenants: Full Location List

Revenants are the trickiest spirits to find. They stay completely invisible until you activate the Radiant Filter on your Camera Obscura. Hold RB and keep it held until the purple meter at the top of the screen drains completely, which also depletes your Willpower. Blood appearing on nearby objects is the tell that a Revenant is hiding nearby.

Here is every confirmed Revenant location:

  • Fearful Man - Kurosawa House Bloodstained Room
  • Man in Study - Kiryu House Sliding Screen Room
  • Drowned Woman - Ukishima Bridge
  • Twin Boy - Tachibana House Twins' Room

Spirit Points Item Values: What Awards the Most Points?

In Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, the Spirit Points system also rewards you for items remaining in your inventory at the end of each chapter. The values below come directly from the Fatal Frame Wiki and represent the bonus points awarded per item held:

Loading table...

Note that this inventory bonus mechanic is specific to Maiden of Black Water. In the Crimson Butterfly Remake, your Spirit Points come from photograph performance rather than leftover inventory.

How Do You Spend Spirit Points in Fatal Frame II Remake?

In the remake, Spirit Points you accumulate feed into the reward system for unlocking cosmetics and useful items. The game tracks your photo performance throughout each chapter and rewards you accordingly. Prioritizing high-scoring shots, chaining captures during combat, and photographing every Specter and Twin Doll you encounter will maximize your total.

Camera upgrades in Fatal Frame II specifically use Spirit Orbs (a separate resource) rather than Spirit Points, so do not confuse the two. Spirit Points are your score-based currency for extras, while Spirit Orbs power up your Camera Obscura's damage and functions.
