Introduction

FIFA 16 marks a genuine shift in how the series handles the fundamentals. EA Canada retooled defending and midfield play from the ground up, making the game feel less like a sprint to goal and more like actual football. With the addition of 12 women's national teams and a new FIFA Trainer system, this entry in the franchise has more to offer new and returning players than most editions before it.

Overview

FIFA 16 arrives as one of the more mechanically focused entries in EA Sports' long-running football simulation series. EA Canada's central goal with this release was balance: tightening up defending, giving midfield more weight, and reducing the frequency of cheap goals that plagued earlier versions. The result is a game that rewards patience and positioning rather than pure pace.

The headline additions sit on both sides of the pitch. Defensive players now have improved tracking and body positioning tools, making it harder for attackers to simply run past the last line. In midfield, passing lanes feel more contested, and holding possession requires actual thought. These changes don't make FIFA 16 a slow game, but they do make it a more deliberate one.

Gameplay and mechanics

FIFA 16's core gameplay loop revolves around three design pillars EA Canada explicitly built the game around:

  • Confidence in defending
  • Control in midfield
  • Moments of magic in attack

Defending received the most attention. Players can now use a new defensive block system that reads passing and shooting trajectories more accurately, and the improved jockeying mechanics make one-on-one situations feel less binary. Midfield battles carry real consequence, with interceptions and pressure playing a bigger role in transitions than in previous entries.

The FIFA Trainer is a heads-up display overlay designed to teach contextual skills in real time during matches. It shows button prompts and timing cues based on what's happening on the pitch, making it genuinely useful for players building up from beginner to intermediate level rather than just a tutorial mode tucked away in a menu.

What makes FIFA 16 different from previous entries?

The most talked-about addition is the inclusion of 12 women's national teams, a first for the series. Teams from the United States, Germany, France, Brazil, England, Australia, Canada, China, Spain, Sweden, Mexico, and Japan are all playable, each with accurate squad rosters. They appear in their own dedicated modes rather than being integrated into the full career structure, but the inclusion itself was a significant step for the franchise.

Beyond that, FIFA 16 introduced physical play changes that affect how players shield the ball and win headers. Aerial duels have more realistic push-and-pull, and shielding the ball on the ground requires better positioning rather than just holding a button. These are small changes on paper but they add up across a full match.

Content and replayability

FIFA 16 ships with the standard suite of modes the series is known for. Ultimate Team returns with the card-collecting and squad-building loop that drives most of the game's long-term engagement. Career Mode covers both player and manager paths, letting you build clubs across multiple seasons or guide a created player through a professional career arc.

The game is available across PlayStation, Xbox, Windows PC, Android, and iOS, with the mobile versions offering a scaled-down but functional football experience. Online seasons and co-op modes extend the competitive side, and the women's national teams add a genuinely new set of matchups to explore outside the standard club football structure.

Visual and audio design

FIFA 16 runs on EA's Ignite engine, with player models and stadium environments that hold up well on current-generation hardware. Crowd animations and lighting conditions vary between venues, and the broadcast-style presentation carries over from previous entries with updated commentary from Martin Tyler and Alan Smith. The audio work in stadiums, particularly the ambient crowd noise during tense moments, does a solid job of selling the match atmosphere that football simulation games live or die on.
