Overview
Golden Axe is a side-scrolling hack-and-slash arcade game developed by Team Shinobi and published by Virgin Mastertronic in 1989. Set in the fictional land of Yuria, a high fantasy medieval world clearly inspired by Conan the Barbarian, the game puts players in control of one of three warriors on a mission to defeat Death Adder, an evil warlord who has captured the king and his daughter, seized the legendary Golden Axe, and threatened to destroy both unless the people of Yuria submit to his rule.
Each of the three playable characters brings a distinct combat identity. Gilius Thunderhead is a battle axe-wielding dwarf with lightning magic. Ax Battler is a broadsword-carrying barbarian who commands earth spells. Tyris Flare is an amazon fighter whose fire magic is the most visually dramatic in the game, capable of filling the entire screen when her magic bar is fully charged. That asymmetry between characters gives the game genuine replay value, since the optimal strategy shifts depending on who you pick.
The story moves through a series of linear stages, taking players from ransacked villages to a castle showdown with Death Adder himself. On certain platforms, including the Mega Drive and PC versions, a second final boss named Death Bringer appears after Death Adder falls, revealing himself as the true threat behind the conflict.

Gameplay and mechanics
The core combat loop is straightforward: move forward, hit enemies with your weapon, and manage your magic meter carefully. The magic system is where the strategic texture lives. Players collect blue potions by kicking small sprites that appear between stages and during bonus rounds. Each potion fills one bar of magic power, and the more bars you spend on a single cast, the stronger the spell effect.

Key mechanics at a glance:
- Magic potions collected from bonus-stage sprites
- Three unique spell types tied to each character
- Mountable creatures called bizarrians found mid-level
- Two-player cooperative play
- Bonus stages between main levels
The bizarrian mount system adds another layer to the combat. Players can knock enemy riders off their creatures and claim the mount for themselves. The Cockatrice, the weakest steed, knocks enemies down with a tail swipe. The dragon, found in later stages, shoots fireballs or breathes fire depending on the attack used. Controlling one of these creatures shifts the tempo of a fight significantly.

World and setting
Yuria is a fully realized fantasy world in miniature. The game moves through distinct environments including the Turtle Village, which is literally built on the shell of a massive living turtle that carries the characters across the sea. Later, a giant eagle transports the warriors directly to Death Adder's castle. These travel sequences give the world a sense of scale that most arcade games of the era never attempted.
Each character's motivation is personal and specific. Gilius lost his twin brother to Death Adder's soldiers. Ax Battler is avenging his murdered mother. Tyris Flare lost both parents. Those backstories are lean by modern standards, but they give the roster a clarity of purpose that still resonates.

Impact and legacy
Golden Axe arrived at a time when the beat 'em up genre was still defining its own rules, and it helped set several of them. The combination of melee combat, screen-clearing magic, rideable enemies, and two-player co-op became a template that countless games borrowed from throughout the 1990s. The game is available today across Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, meaning the original arcade experience remains accessible across nearly every major platform. For anyone interested in the history of the hack-and-slash genre, Golden Axe is not optional reading.
