Mud in Gothic 1 Remake explained ...

Mud is one of those NPCs you either find endearing or want gone within the first 30 seconds. In Gothic 1 Remake, he hangs around near Snaf's cooking pot just inside the Old Camp, and the moment you walk past him he latches on and starts talking. He won't stop. The good news is that his relentless chatter is exactly what you need to unlock the Mud Freak achievement, and the process is simple once you know the order of operations.

Where to find Mud

Mud is positioned next to Snaf the cook, just to the left of the Old Camp castle entrance. He's hard to miss. Walk past him once and he'll immediately start following you, cycling through his lines whether you want him to or not.

How to unlock the Mud Freak achievement

The Mud Freak achievement unlocks when you exhaust every one of Mud's dialogue options. There are exactly 24 voice lines in his rotation. Once all 24 have played out, the trigger for the achievement is in place and you can move on to getting rid of him.

The cleanest approach:

  1. Walk past Mud near Snaf's pot to pick him up.
  2. Let him follow you around the Old Camp while he talks.
  3. Keep walking. Don't skip ahead or fast-travel away.
  4. Once his dialogue starts looping, save your game.
  5. Try using the "P off" and "Could you be silent for just one moment" dialogue options if they're available, as some players report these help trigger the achievement condition.
  6. Knock him out (details below).
  7. Let him get up and speak. The achievement should pop.

How to get rid of Mud for good

Once you have the achievement secured, removing Mud from your life is straightforward. Lure him away from the Old Camp so no guards are watching, then punch him or use a weapon until he's knocked down. He'll get back up, call you a freak (ironic, given the achievement name), and sprint back to camp.

After that exchange, Mud permanently loses interest in you. You can walk past him in the Old Camp without triggering any more one-sided conversations.

Should you bother with the Mud Freak achievement?

If you're going for a full completion run, yes. The achievement costs you maybe 10 minutes of walking around the Old Camp with an annoying shadow. The payoff is a clean trophy and permanent silence from Mud.

If you're not chasing trophies, skipping him entirely is also valid. Just don't walk past his spot near Snaf if you want to avoid the whole situation.

Other things to do in the Old Camp area

While you're in the Old Camp dealing with Mud, there's plenty of other early-game content worth handling. If you haven't sorted out your food supply yet, the Snaf's Recipe quest guide covers how to get free daily food from the same cook Mud is standing next to, which is genuinely useful in the early hours.

The Old Camp itself has a full questline worth completing. Joining the faction and working through Diego's approval process is covered in detail in the guide to joining the Old Camp and completing Casting Shadows.
