Introduction

Bandai Namco is taking the Gundam franchise somewhere new with Gundam Rogue Orbit, a high-speed action game built around fluid Mobile Suit combat and an original story. Playing as RE-X, pilot of the Gundam Helix, the game blends cinematic presentation with deep customization and hard-hitting battles that span both ground and aerial environments. This is Gundam reimagined from the ground up.

Overview

Gundam Rogue Orbit is a third-person action shooter developed and published by Bandai Namco that takes place in a fully original Gundam universe. Rather than adapting an existing series, the game builds its own story around RE-X, a pilot who commandeers the Gundam Helix and, alongside a Haro companion named Vii, faces a catastrophic threat known as the Apocalypse. The result is a game that keeps the franchise's mechanical giants and dramatic scale intact while giving new and veteran fans a story that doesn't require homework to enjoy.

The combat system is built for speed. Players dash across large battlefields, chain ground attacks into aerial combos, and switch between weapon types on the fly to maintain pressure on enemies. Each weapon carries unique skills, and building a personal rhythm around those tools is central to how the game plays. Slow, methodical mech combat this is not.

Gameplay and mechanics: how does the combat actually work?

Gundam Rogue Orbit answers that question with a high-mobility action framework that rewards aggression and adaptability. The core loop revolves around:

  • Dashing to close distance and reposition
  • Chaining ground and aerial attacks fluidly
  • Equipping Apocalypse Units (AP-U) for build variety
  • Mixing weapon skills to create custom combat styles
  • Personalizing loadouts before each engagement

The AP-U system is the most interesting mechanical layer. These units slot into your Mobile Suit and directly influence how it performs in combat, pushing players toward deliberate build decisions rather than just picking the biggest gun. Loadout construction before missions becomes its own kind of puzzle.

Customization: building your Mobile Suit

The customization system goes beyond cosmetics. Parts and AP-Us combine to define how the Gundam Helix actually behaves on the battlefield, so two players running the same mission can end up with genuinely different combat experiences depending on their build choices. Color customization adds a personal layer on top of that, letting pilots make their machine visually distinct.

The Deluxe Edition bundles in a Mission Reward Booster, a Mobile Suit Color Pack, Premium MOD Skins, and a Digital Artwork and Music Selection for players who want expanded options at launch. Pre-ordering also unlocks the Earth Blue Color Customization early, which is a minor perk but a clean one for fans who want to look the part from day one.

World and setting

The game spans both the vacuum of space and the surfaces of diverse planets, giving the combat arenas real visual range. Battles in open space play differently from engagements on planetary terrain, and the shift between environments keeps the action from feeling repetitive across the campaign.

RE-X's partnership with Vii, the Haro companion, runs through the story as a connective thread. Haro units have been a fixture of the Gundam franchise for decades, and Vii's role here grounds the game's original universe in recognizable franchise DNA without leaning on nostalgia as a crutch.

Content and replayability

Gundam Rogue Orbit is built around a mission structure that feeds into its customization loop, where better performance and rewards feed back into stronger or more varied builds. The AP-U system, combined with the weapon skill combinations available, gives the game genuine replay incentive beyond a single story playthrough. Players chasing optimal loadouts or trying different combat styles will find enough mechanical depth to justify returning to earlier missions with new configurations.
